Contact  This article talks all about when the Europe and Natives make contact after Columbus  There were many positive and negative results of these meetings  Your job was to record as many as you could while reading…fill in or add on to your chart was we go

Native American Benefits…  New livestock- sheep's, cows, pigs, chicken  Horse is introduced- used for hunting, improved transportation  Clothing changes- new weaving and dying techniques. New jobs for weaving and textile production  New plants- wheat, barley, citrus, bananas, improve diet, better farming techniques  New Technology- knives, guns, axe heads, traps,  Wealth, some tribes involved in the fur trade gain money  PLOW- improved hunting skills, farming building

Native American Drawbacks…  DISEASE- 50-90% of the population is killed by diseases such as small pox, black death, diptheria, measles, etc. Natives had NO immunity to them  Slavery- worked in mines or on farms, worked to death  Lost wealth- cities looted, destroyed, wealth stolen from them  Forest/crops cut down destroyed  Massacred/killed in warfare for territory  Land was taken/stolen from them  Forced to convert to Christianity or face death  Forced to stop practicing their culture, convert to more European style of life  24 million Natives out of 25 million are killed from disease, warfare, and slavery

PLEASE NOTE:  For Natives the DRAWBACKS were much worse the Benefits  They lost way more than they gained in the contact between the two groups  Natives would have been much better off if the Europeans had never come to the new world  Contact mostly NOT GOOD!!!

European Benefits…  New crops and foods- sugar, tobacco, corn, potatoes, turkey, beans, squash, buffalo meat, cocoa, etc…  New foods to eat and sell  Lots of money to be made from the new crops  FUR TRADE- LOTS OF WEALTH!!!  New sources of money, wealth including silver, gold, crops, etc…  1000’s of new medicines from plants, some yet to be discovered  New healing knowledge gained from natives  New lands to live on, farm. Europe is overcrowded and new area to send people to  New source of labor- they force the natives to work on farms and mines  New materials for clothing including cotton

European Drawbacks…  Some risk in exploring, sailors and explorers died from long journey  Some diseases from the natives but not very deadly  New land required slaves so they had to get them and control them somehow  Never find a Northwest passage to Asia  Slaves were dying very quickly, had to keep finding more slaves  Many Europeans gained nothing from explorers  Competition between European groups will lead to warfare

Please note…  Europeans gained a plethora of new things from exploration  Their drawbacks were minor compared to the Natives  Exploration was very profitable and beneficial to the Europeans  THEY GOT THE BETTER END OF THE DEAL

What now… Prewriting…  We will be writing an essay about the benefits and drawbacks of Contact  You will need to tell me which group you think benefited MORE from the contact and exchange  You will also need to write about the benefits and drawbacks for each group
