©2000 Taiwan University EMBA. All rights reserved. 9 Fast Content Delivery – Questions Is it a good solutions to increase the bandwidth for the problem ? -The growth rate of the bandwidth the is always slower than the growth rate of the Internet -The cost of the the bandwidth is the concern So that to in crease the bandwidth is only to transfer one problem to another place

©2000 Taiwan University EMBA. All rights reserved. 10 Fast Content Delivery – Web Caching 1. Caching is everywhere -CPU has the caching (L1 or L2 Cache is s quicker buffer between slow DRAM and CPU. ) -HDD has the caching (from fast interface response without accessing the slower R/W component) -System has the caching (RAM cache, HDD cache) 2. Internet use Web caching to fast the content delivery -Put the content in cache server which closer to the users to reduce the Internet latency 3. ISP also benefit from the Web caching -ISP don’t need to waste the resource to reload the caching data from original server so that the cost was saved and also can maintain the enough bandwidth

27
©2000 Taiwan University EMBA. All rights reserved. 27 Fast Content Delivery – ArrowPoint The benefit of the Arrowpoint “Content Smart caching “ Switching -Improve the cache hit rate -Bypass the caches entirely for the requests for non-cacheable content which significantly reduces the cost of the transparent cache deployment while improving overall user response time -Solve the disadvantage of the reverse caching
