16. Predicate Adjectives Jacobs states Eleanor Roosevelt’s childhood fears through a series of predicate adjectives. Feelings unwanted, Eleanor became shy and withdrawn. She was afraid of the dark, afraid of animals, afraid of other children, afraid of being scolded, afraid of strangers, afraid that people would not like her.

17. A predicate adjective follows a linking verb, such as be, seem, become, or feel and describes the subject. Tip#1: When you use a series of predicate adjectives, with or without a coordinating conjunction (and, or, but) separate them with commas: Eleanor felt plain looking, ordinary, and homely. Tip #2: Predicate adjectives are different from other adjectives because they come after the word they are describing, and they are separated from that word by a verb.
