1 How to Tell the Difference
GOOD TOUCH/BAD TOUCH How to Tell the Difference Today we are talking about touches and feelings we get from touches. Talking about touches and feelings is very important, because it helps us to be safe. Developed and designed by Mary Jo Sampson, Revised by BISD Elementary Counseling Department

2 What do they mean? Touches and Feelings
Why is it important to know the difference between a good touch and a bad touch? What message does our feelings send us?

3 FEELINGS Angry Sad Happy Afraid Embarrassed Mischievous Surprised
Ashamed Sad Afraid Mischievous Joyful Nervous What does your face look like when you are sad, angry, embarrassed, afraid, or ashamed? Can you name some things that make you feel sad, afraid, ashamed, angry, and embarrassed? When you feel ashamed, do you feel like hiding your face?

4 Good Touch A good touch makes you feel warm, comfortable, and safe inside. A good touch for me is when someone gives me a hug to say hello. What are some good touches for you? Have students name at least four good touches such as a kiss, a pat on the back, a handshake etc.

5 Bad Touch A bad touch does not feel good. It may make you feel uneasy or bothered inside. A bad touch for me is when someone pinches me on purpose. What are some bad touches for you? Have class name four bad touches such as kicking, slapping, pinching, or being touched where you are not supposed to.

6 How many of us like: High fives. Hugs. Kisses. Rubs on the back
How many of us like: High fives? Hugs? Kisses? Rubs on the back? From family or people we are comfortable with? Who are people that we know, love, and trust?

7 How about those same kind of touches from people we do not know, we do not like, we do not feel comfortable with, or we do not trust? It is very important to know, sometimes it makes a difference who is giving touching us. Hugs, kisses, and touches from people we know, love, and trust can be good touches, but those same kinds of touches from people we don’t know, love, or trust can be bad touches.

8 Good touches give us good feelings inside:
Excited Happy Joyful Surprised We feel happy, loved, and wanted. Good touches do not make us feel uncomfortable or ashamed.

9 Bad touches give us bad feelings:
Sad Afraid Ashamed Embarrassed Angry When a touch makes us feel sad, frightened, unloved, or ashamed, we need to say stop. I am going to show you some pictures, you see if you can tell me if these are good touches or bad touches.

10 Let’s practice!! Good touch or Bad touch?

15 Good touch or Bad touch? Tickling can turn to a bad touch when it is too long, too hard, in places that do not feel comfortable, or when they do not stop after being asked to stop.

16 You make the call!!! If you get a touch you do not like which type of touch would this be? Bad touch

17 No one should touch our private body parts except to keep us clean or healthy.
Even people that we know, love, and trust should not be touching us in ways that make us feel ashamed or uncomfortable. Parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, teachers, babysitters, pastors or others should not touch you in a bad way, and should never ask you to keep it a secret.

18 No room for secrets. When touched in a bad way, do not keep it a secret. Tell someone that you trust and can help you.

19 Who can you tell if someone touches you in a way that makes you uncomfortable?
Parents Grandparents Teacher Counselor Pastor Other trusted adults

20 Help!!! If the person you tell does not know how to help you or does not do anything to help you, what can you do? Keep telling someone until they help you. Tell other trusted adults.

21 TOUCHING RULES There are good touches and bad touches.
No one should ever touch private parts except to keep them clean or healthy. Never agree to keep bad touches a secret. Tell someone you trust and keep telling until you get help with the problem. Remember the Touching Rules.
