A LACCEI-IGIP Partnership: Developing Internationally Recognized Engineering Faculty Excellence for the Americas Dr. Ivan E. Esparragoza Dr. Maria Larrondo-Petrie Dr. Zenaida Otero-Gephardt Dr. Michael Auer Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions International Society for Engineering Education World Engineering Education Forum WEEF 2012 Buenos Aires, Argentina

Agenda Introduction Curriculum Model Foundation LACCEI Curriculum Delivery Method Conclusions

Introduction There is as need to ensure that engineering instructors have: – In-depth knowledge on specific knowledge content – Knowledge and skills required to transfer discipline knowledge in a teaching environment Europe has led the effort in engineering pedagogy Engineering instructors are required to take teaching training courses to be able to have a permanent position as instructors

Introduction The International Society for Engineering Education (IGIP) based on Austria accredits training centers that prepare international engineering educators – accredited centers, most of them are located in Europe and Russia and only one center in the Americas in Brazil. The Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions (LACCEI) and IGIP have joint efforts to develop a program for faculty development to promote engineering teaching excellence in the Americas.

Curriculum Model Foundations The engineering pedagogy curriculum developed by LACCEI is based on three models: – IGIP Curriculum model – Technology, Pedagogy, Content Knowledge (TPCK) Model – LACCEI model Goal: Instructor completing the LACCEI engineering pedagogy curriculum will receive the I NG.P AED.IGIP certificate.

IGIP Curriculum Modules Core modules (8 credit points) Theoretical and practical engineering pedagogy Laboratory methodology Theory modules (4 credit points) Psychology Sociology Ethics Intercultural competences Practice modules (8 credit points) Oral communication skills Scientific writing Working with projects Media E-learning and computer aided technologies Additional topics

PCK and TPCK Models Good instructors should be able to distinguish between subject knowledge and pedagogical knowledge ContentPedagogy Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) Pedagogical techniques used to teach concepts Technology Technological Content Knowledge (TCK) Technology used to explain subject concepts Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK) Technology support pedagogical goals Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPCK) Relationship between the three areas

LACCEI Model 1.Teaching/Learning Process To know the different types of learning styles and the process to acquire knowledge and skills To improve teaching skills 2.Innovative Teaching Techniques To discover new and alternative teaching techniques To use new technologies in the learning process To use laboratory didactics effectively to teach theoretical concepts and to explain practical applications 3.Broadening Engineering Education To promote professional skills in the courses and in the classroom To build global competencies effectively AreasObjectives

LACCEI Model 4.Motivation and Interest To discover effective techniques to enhance students’ interest in engineering subjects To foster motivation and interest in the students to learn and grow professionally 5.Assessment To develop effective assessment tools To use different assessment techniques in the courses AreasObjectives

Conclusions The proposed curriculum and training program differs from existing centers for teaching enhancement in: – Scope of the content – Target audience – Intensity of the program – Final certificate Faculty development and leadership are the hallmark of excellence in engineering education.

Conclusions The curriculum described here as a result of the partnership between LACCEI and IGIP will facilitate the adequate training to engineering faculty in the Americas: – to become excellent educators and – to be certified by a globally recognized certification system such as I NG.P AED.IGIP.
