4 Scope and Application All StFX students Accessible sexual assault website information outlining resources. Survivors of sexual assault are empowered to select the options that are right for them.

5 Definitions Sexual Assault-any unwanted act of a sexual nature imposed by one person upon another May include: kissing, fondling, oral, anal sex, vaginal intercourse, or other forms of penetration.

6 Consensual Sexual Activity Willing agreement to engage in specific behavior The entire responsibility for correct discernment is upon the person making a sexual advance.

7 Non-Consensual Silence Intoxication/under influence of drugs Sleeping, unconscious or unable to communicate Threats or coercion Prior sexual relationship

8 Privacy Every effort is made to protect student identity and to avoid undue invasion of privacy. When collaborative staff involvement is warranted, staff are required to keep student information in confidence.

9 Sexual Assault Response 1. Minimize Trauma Move to a quiet place to talk Support Network Assume a helping role focused on what supports the student wants to engage with now.

10 Sexual Assault Response 2. Always take reports of sexual assault seriously Give the student lots of your listening time Empathy- “not your fault” Emphasize that the student is in control Preserving Privacy is paramount

11 Sexual Assault Response 3. Provide Options for Medical Attention Discourage the student from showering, changing clothes, eating or drinking prior to receiving medical attention to preserve forensic evidence.

12 Sexual Assault Response In the case of a recent sexual assault, phone 911 if the person is injured, immobile or in immediate distress that requires medical care.
