The Hupa Indian Tribe By: Alison Fung Room: T-3

2 Region The Hupa lived in the northwest coast of California. They lived by the Trinity River. The tribe lives on the Hoopa Valley Reservation, the largest in California. Eagles, salmon, otters, hawks, elk, and deer live there. There are redwoods, cedar, and oak trees.

3 Housing The Hupa built their houses out of cedar slabs. The two main buildings were storehouses and sweat lodges. Women and children slept in the storehouses and men slept in the sweat lodges.

4 Activities For food, the Hupa ate salmon, deer, elk, and acorns. The meat and fish were smoked to preserve it. Also, the Hupa traded with the Yurok with skins and acorns for canoes, fish, seaweed, and shells. They also made baskets out of grass and jewelry out of shells.

5 Artifacts The Hupa Indians were expert basket weavers.
They used a bow and arrows and spears to hunt. They smoked salmon on racks and crushed acorns with rock grinders.

Beliefs/Ceremonies The Hupa practiced the annual World Renewal Ceremonies to restore the balance and harmony of the world. One of them is the White Deerskin Dance. ^White Deerskin Dance Costume^
