2 + Cleaning your Clothes ① Gather all dirty clothing ② Sort the clothes According to: colour (fastness), type of fabric, washing methods ③ Do up zippers, buckles, velcro, and empty pockets ④ Pre-treat stains Never put a stained article of clothing in the dryer – it will bake it in! ⑤ Select a washing method Variation in water amount and temperature, agitation speed ⑥ Select the water temperature Hot water will help sanitize clothing ⑦ Dispense laundry products ⑧ Dry the clothes Dryer or air-dry (flat or hung up)

3 + Hand Washing Clothes THINGS TO CONSIDER IN HANDWASHING CLOTHING: Use a sink or container large enough for clothes to move freely. Choose a soap or detergent appropriate for the type of fabric.

4 + Steps to Hand Washing ① Fill sink with water at the temperature appropriate for the type of garment fabric. ② Add detergent to the water and mix. ③ Add garment to the water-detergent mixture. ④ Soak for 5-20 minutes (depends on the type of fabric & garment). ⑤ Gently squeeze excess water from the garment. ⑥ Drain the sink and add fresh water. ⑦ Gently squeeze garment to push sudsy water through garment. ⑧ Rinse garment at least twice.

7 + Sewing Vocabulary – Textbook Using the text, Today’s Teen (Chapter 43), answer the following question in your notes. ① Describe and write the use of the following cutting and measuring equipment: small scissors, shears, seam ripper, sewing gauge, tape measure ② State the purpose and/or describe the following pinning and sewing equipment: straight pins, pin cushion, thimble, hand-sewing needles, machine needles

8 + Answers Small scissors – to clip threads and trim Shears – to cut fabric Seam ripper – to cut and remove stitches Sewing gauge – a small ruler with a slide marker is used for measuring a specific area (i.e. width of a seam or hem) Tape measure – a narrow strip of durable plastic with inches and centimetres to measure fabric

9 + Answers Straight pins – used to anchor the pattern to the fabric and to hold laers of fabric together for sewing Pin cushion – to keep pins and needles tidy Thimble – used to protect finger and to push needle through fabric Hand-sewing needles – variety of sizes to stitch by hand Machine needles – variety of thicknesses based on fabric
