Welcome to DEP’s GIS Workshop Series Workshop 4 Symbology in ArcMap

Displaying Symbols Click on plus and minus signs to the left of the layer name to expand or collapse layer names and/or symbology. Symbology in ArcMap 2

Class Exercise Open C:\ArcGIS Training Materials \Symbology\Symbology_Doc1.mxdC:\ArcGIS Training Materials \Symbology\Symbology_Doc1.mxd Zoom in to 1:100,000 scale Drag the Quaternary Geology layer beneath the Base Map layer. Drag the Quaternary Geology layer above the Base Map layer. When are the Base Map layers NOT visible? Symbology in ArcMap 3

Drawing Order Affects What You See! Solid Fill Polygon Layer On Top of Base Map Layer = Base Map Layers Not Visible Symbology in ArcMap 4

Solid Fill Polygon Layer Beneath Base Map Layer = Base Map Layers Visible Drawing Order Affects What You See! Symbology in ArcMap 5

Fill Color and Transparency To “see through” a polygon layer, there are two options: 1.Set the Fill Color to No Color in the Symbol Selector dialog box. (Hint: You may need to reset your Outline Color to distinguish this layer from other layers.) OR 2. Set a Transparency percentage in the Properties/Display dialog box. Symbology in ArcMap 6

Setting Fill Color to “No Color” Select “No Color” from the Fill Color box. Symbology in ArcMap 7

Result: Symbology in ArcMap 8

Setting Transparency Open Properties dialog box by double clicking on the layer name. Select the Display tab. Type in a transparency percentage. Symbology in ArcMap 9

Result: Symbology in ArcMap 10

Symbology Types FeaturesSingle Symbol CategoriesUnique Values Unique Values/Many Fields QuantitiesGraduated Colors Graduated Symbols Multiple Attributes Quantity by Category Symbology in ArcMap 11

Features (Single Symbol) Every feature is given the same symbol. In this example, dams in CT are represented by a red dot. Symbology in ArcMap 12

Go to the Symbol Selector dialog box by clicking on the symbol in the legend. Symbology in ArcMap 13 The Symbol Dialog Box

Symbology in ArcMap 14 Point Example – Boat Launches Start with a custom color Choose a shape, size, and angle View the result Creating and Modifying Symbols

Finding New Symbols There are many other sets of symbols available Symbology in ArcMap 15

Creating and Modifying Symbols Symbology in ArcMap 16 Polygon Example – DEP Property Start with a custom color Add a marker fill View the result

Categories (Unique Values) Features are grouped according to a value in a field. In this example, DEP Property is grouped by Area Type. Symbology in ArcMap 17

Categories (Unique Values, Many Fields) Features are grouped according to values from more than one field. In this example, aquifer protection areas are symbolized by two fields: Av_legend and Adopted. Symbology in ArcMap 18

Quantities (Graduated Colors) Features are symbolized according to quantitative data. In this example, different colors depict town population. Symbology in ArcMap 19

Quantities (Graduated Symbols) Features are symbolized according to quantitative data. In this example, different size points depict town population. Symbology in ArcMap 20

Multiple Attributes (Quantity by Category) Features are symbolized according to categorical and quantitative data. In this example, Pop./sq. mile and Description are shown. Symbology in ArcMap 21

Environmental Justice Areas Symbology in ArcMap 22

DEP’s Layer Files Symbology in ArcMap 23 Characterized by “.lyr”. Does not contain actual spatial or attribute data, only “points to” data Contains “instructions” for displaying symbology Can have multiple datasets in one layer

Saving a Layer File If you custom symbolize a layer, you might want to save it for use in this.mxd and other.mxd’s. Right click on the layer name in ArcMap, choose “Save as Layer File…” and specify a location in which to save your file. Symbology in ArcMap 24
