3 Background Began in 1995 and ran in 1998 and 2003 Major review in 2005/2006 which led to the survey running continuously from 2008 onwards Current contract for 2008-2011 Procurement underway for 2012-2015 Presentation will focus on the 2008-2011 surveys

4 Aims and Objectives To provide robust information on the health and health related behaviours of people across Scotland –To estimate the prevalence of particular health conditions –To estimate the prevalence of certain risk factors associated with these health conditions and to document the pattern of related health behaviours –To look at the differences between sub-groups of the population –To monitor trends in the population’s health over time

5 Survey Design 2008-2011 Annual interviews with approximately –6,500 to 7,500 adults –1,800 to 2,500 children –Varies each year due to response rates and whether Health Boards have boosted their samples Designed to provide Scotland results annually and HB results at least every 4 years

6 Survey Content 2008-2011 2 stage survey Interview for all households –Mental health, dental health, smoking, drinking, diet, physical activity, CVD, use of services, respiratory health, height & weight measurements (administered by interviewer, not self-reported) –Module purchased by NHS Health Scotland with questions on knowledge, attitudes and motivations to replace the previous HEPS survey. Nurse visit for a subset of households –Further questions on mental health, prescriptions etc. –Biological measurements, blood, urine and saliva samples, lung function tests, blood pressure, waist and hip circumference measurements.

7 Research Outputs Annual reports –Main report and technical report –2008 and 2009 published so far –2010 due in September –Web tables Topic reports –UK Comparisons –Investigating the Glasgow Effect –Further two reports to come on Older People and Children’s health Datasets –Each year datasets are deposited with the UK data archive –Single years and composite years
