The Reinforcement Area of the Post Conference Presenters: Alishia Ancar & Nicole Bolen

Quality Instruction?

The Reinforcement Area of the Post Conference Plan Agenda Objectives Essential Elements Recognizing evidence Making connections Where are we on the continuum? Closure

Learning Objectives Participants will identify the basic components of the reinforcement area of the post conference. Participants will understand as well as explain how to connect the reinforcement to other areas of teaching, student achievement and indicators from the Instructional Rubric.

What is the purpose of the reinforcement area of the post conference? RoundRobin

Procedural to Conceptual… It is supposed to happen, according to the TAP model Working to identify specific evidence correlating with the indicator targeted for reinforcement Post conference is an opportunity to reinforce teaching, making connections to the rubric, student achievement, and instructional practices ProceduralConceptual

Effective Planning… Before the observation During the Observation After the Observation

Why is effective planning necessary for the observation? Creates purposeful questions in order to gather evidence that will lead to effective coaching during the pre and post conference Creates a circular process that enables connections between lesson planning, IGPs, reinforcement and refinement of the lesson

Effective Planning… Builds credibility for the evaluation process Builds a strong connection between each teacher’s instructional practices, student achievement and evaluation scores

Essential Elements… Reinforcement Objective A clear label of the standard being reinforced, language from the evaluation rubric, and an action for teacher to take.

Stand Up, Hand Up, Pair Up Timed Pair Share Why would the reinforcement and refinement sections begin with the development of an objective?

Open-ended with focus on the indicator and/or descriptor being addressed Language from the evaluation rubric (descriptor) Leveled for teacher capacity Focused on student achievement Self-Reflection Question(s)

Identify Evidence Evidence is gathered from the script that supports the indicator/descriptor(s) that was selected to reinforce.

Recommended Action Encourage the teacher to continue including descriptors from the reinforced indicator in his/her future lessons.

Elicit Feedback The evaluator should use questioning to lead the teacher to reflect on the importance of including this indicator in his/her lessons and how the teacher can continue to strengthen this area. These questions should connect to the Reinforcement Objective.

Greeting: Hello Mr. Yul B. Learnin. Thank you for allowing me to observe in your classroom. Your hard work and support are much appreciated. Length of conference : We will meet today for approximately 30-40 minutes. Purpose: The purpose of this conference is professional growth. We will discuss the lesson observed. Identify an area of strength (reinforcement) and identify an area to strengthen (area of refinement). Do you have any questions? How do you think the lesson went? Handout 1

Reinforcement: Reinforcement Objective: By the end of the conference, Mr. Yul B. Learnin will explain his process for using activities and materials that incorporate resources beyond the school curriculum. Reflective Questions: How do you decide on the types of activities and materials to use during a lesson? Think about your curriculum, how does that guide your planning of activities and materials?

Specific Evidence from the lesson: You displayed bottles of colored water and asked students to predict how the levels of water in each bottle would affect the sound or pitch. Students made predictions and used a graph to review class thinking. It was evident that resources outside the curriculum were used to enhance the content. The story “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” provided an opportunity for students to experience pitch using a familiar piece of literature. In addition, students were divided into groups and used rubber bands, balloons and straws to explore pitch.

Recommended Action: Continue to use resources outside of the curriculum to enhance content. You will serve as an excellent resource for other teachers. Providing ideas and additional resources will prove valuable to teachers as well as your students. Elicit Feedback: How would you describe/explain to a first year teacher the importance of using resources outside the adopted the curriculum?

Reviewing Conference Plans Handouts 2 & 3

Moving Beyond The Procedural Level… It is supposed to happen, according to the TAP model Procedural Working to identify specific evidence correlating with the indicator targeted for reinforcement

Movie Time…

Questions to think about when identifying the area of reinforcement? When selecting an area of reinforcement, which indicator would have the greatest impact on student achievement? Is the identified area of reinforcement an area in which the teacher is exhibiting noticeable growth? Are there connections to other indicators, strengthening overall teaching practices?

Movie Time…

Motivating Students The teacher sometimes… organizes the content so that it is personally meaningful and relevant to students. develops learning experiences where inquiry, curiosity and exploration are valued. reinforces and rewards effort.

Movie Time…

Reinforcing the Teacher

Making Connections

Talking Chips What are “next steps” for you as you strengthen the reinforcement area of the Post Conference?

Where are we… Procedural Conceptual It is supposed to happen, according to the TAP model Working to identify specific evidence correlating with the indicator targeted for reinforcement Post conference is an opportunity to reinforce teaching, making connections to the rubric, student achievement, and instructional practices

Preparing for your next post conference…. ___________________________________ Three things you will leave with today as you plan next steps.
