5 All teachers are expected to receive mid-year and end-of-year evaluations. Overall evaluations (especially Domains 1-3) consist of multiple ratings events. –Example: End-of-year overall rating for Domain 2 includes ratings from two formal observations and several unannounced observations How should the overall teacher evaluation ratings be determined? 5 Overall Teacher Evaluation Ratings

8 The objective of the new teacher evaluation process is to promote and compensate based on high teacher performance and/or teacher growth with student results. Teachers should be retained if they demonstrate sufficient growth in their practice during the year. 8 Overall Teacher Evaluation

9 Option 1 Standards-Based Determination Overall teacher FET ratings are based on a running record throughout the school year. Ratings from formal observations overwrite prior scores. Unannounced observations increase or decrease scores by at most.5 points. Domain 4 evidence (nonobservational) ratings overwrite prior scores during the year 9 Overall Teacher Evaluation Rating

10 Advantages This method is similar to the way students’ grades are assigned in Alliance. Emphasis is placed on overall performance by the end of the year. Teachers are not penalized for poor initial performance at the beginning of the school year. Unannounced observation ratings affect overall teacher FET ratings. Teachers will see changes in their overall FET ratings more frequently Disadvantages Overwriting prior scores masks the issue that student achievement may not be directly correlated to overall FET ratings (i.e., do overall FET ratings need to be directly correlated to student achievement?) Tracking the ratings requires a different system than the existing process. Standards-Based Determination 10

15 Use of the Survey To provide individual teachers with feedback on students’ perceptions of teachers’ classroom environment and practices To be included as a component of individual teacher evaluation and compensation Design of the Survey Each survey should require a maximum of 30 minutes to administer. Each survey that a student completes will be for one teacher. Survey Item Selection Each standard (not each indicator) should have at least three survey items. Items should include responses that are both positive and negative in order to solicit students’ meaningful feedback. Administration of the Survey Each student is expected to complete at most two teacher surveys. Survey administration will be for at least 33% of students that a teacher has in their classes. Students will be randomly selected with an approximately equal number of students from each class for a teacher. 15 Student Survey
