Interdisciplinary work Two examples of RESAD studies. 1 Taller fin de carrera (final degree workshop) in the 4th year 2 Directing students projects in the 4th year.

1. Taller fin de carrera (performance) From 2006 to 2013 Compulsory activity for around 70 students Divided in 5 companies or groups The 4 careers together: Acting Directing, Set design and Playwright

Some problems the activity arose It was too late for them to work together for the first time. It was too late for them to work together for the first time. Playwrights had just three months for the first script Playwrights had just three months for the first script Actors and directors had just 2’5 months to work together (from April to June) Actors and directors had just 2’5 months to work together (from April to June) The association among the members of the groups was not always free. The association among the members of the groups was not always free.

A different activity: Directors projects Students of 3rd and 4th years of Directing have to find actors for their performances by themselves (from the school students, or from outside) The occasional students of Acting collaborate freely, and they don’t’ get any ECT for their work. The occasional set design students are sometimes evaluated for their collaborations. Sometimes they are not

Survey on this activity The free association makes it easily going The free association makes it easily going Students get involved for artistic purposes, not for academic reasons. Students get involved for artistic purposes, not for academic reasons. They feel closer to professional profile and far from school treatments They feel closer to professional profile and far from school treatments

How it works Directors have the normal budget for their performance (300 Euros for each one) Directors have the normal budget for their performance (300 Euros for each one) They use the school for rehearsals and in order to perform. 8 One example: El mar (2010)

Juan Ollero (Directing, 2010) had his degree through this performance. Actors and set designer were students of RESAD

About the company They met as a group in London, while an Erasmus exchange at the Rose Brudford, in 2009. They were at their 3 rd year. They came from different disciplines in our school: Directing, Acting, Movement and Set design. In London they performed a piece written by a Spanish playwright, Angélica Lidell

Mirar mucho tiempo tus valles

Long look at your valleys

In the Bologna CV (2010)

Back in Madrid, in February 2010, they performed El mar as Juan’s examination El mar is a research on the Greek tragedy heroes, and the way to perform it by visual theatre. There was just a few words on it, and a lot of physical research within the group. Juan got the maximum mark for his directing work

The performance was selected to represent RESAD at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano festival Master Class, in June 2010.

Four among the 6 students have decided to keep on working together as a company. The other 2 ones are still on their 4th year at school

Pointing some thoughts about it The new Curriculum of Studies (Bologna 2010) is taking care of this necessary free association, as it happened with El mar company. The former Taller fin de carrera, as a compulsory subject, has disappeared in the new studies program. 20 Some decisions on interdisciplinary A new free space of interdisciplinary collaboration has been opened in some or our disciplines up from the 3rd year. The components of the groups will be freely chosen among themselves. All of them will receive some ECTs for their participation (from 6 to 10, depending on the career)

New problems will probably come… It’s never easy in our school To be continued….
