d’Auvergne 2014/15

Introduction Read Write Inc. is a structured phonics program to teach reading and spelling. It has three main elements: 1) Speed Sounds Sets 1, 2 and 3 2) Ditties and storybooks 3) ‘Get writing’ books

During the Speed Sounds set 1, 2 and 3 children will learn: 44 sounds To read words using sound blending To write the letters/letter groups which represent the 44 sounds. Learn to write words by saying the sounds and graphemes. More on Speed sounds

Meet Fred! Fred can only speak in sounds! Fred Talk - reading Fred Fingers -spelling Pure Sounds... c-a-t not ‘cuh’ ‘a’ ‘tuh’

Avoid saying the ‘uh’!! Bouncy consonants Avoid saying ‘cuh’ ‘tuh’ ffflllmmmnnnrrrsssvvvzzzsshhtthhnng (thing) Stretchy consonants c-c-ch-h-hp-p-pt-t-tch-ch-ch Speed sounds set 1

Fred’s vowel sounds The English language can be very confusing because there are only five vowel letters (a,e,i,o,u) but twenty vowel sounds. a apple e egg i insect o orange u umbrella ay may I play? ee what do you see? igh fly high ow blow the snow oo poo at the zoo oo look at a book ar Start the car or shut the door air that’s not fair ir whirl and twirl ou shout it out oy toy for a boy ire fire fire! ear hear with your ear ure Sure it’s pure Speed sounds set 2

Speed sounds set 3 So far the children will have learned one grapheme for each sound. They will be able to read using these sounds and can spell words using these sounds. They will now be able to learn more ways of writing the same sounds. Children will be taught the names of the letters at this stage. Letter names will now be used for spelling because children will be learning alternative graphemes for the same sound.

Green and Red words Green words are words made up of graphemes from the charts. They are called green because once children have learned these graphemes, they can read and go! Red words are common words that contain graphemes that are not found in the charts e.g. Said, want, the, would. They are called Red because children may have to stop and think about these words, because they cannot easily read the words by sound-blending.

Home Readers Home readers. Each week your child will bring home a Read Write Inc. folder. This will contain: The book they have been reading this week during RWInc. A letter about how to use and care for the book. A teaching stick The folder should be kept in their book bags and returned to school every day as groups may work on a story for different durations.

Hot-listers wanted! If you are able to help for the last ten minutes of the school day please put your name down with Mrs Le Moignan.
