Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine www.medev.ac.uk 1 Simulation + SimBaby What, why and how?

What is simulation? “A person, device or set of conditions that tries to present problems authentically. The student or trainee is required to respond to the problems he or she would under natural circumstances…” “Simulation is a technique, not a technology..” www.medev.ac.uk

Why do simulation? Increasing student numbers Decreased ‘hands-on’ clinical exposure, especially to sick patients Patient safety agenda Increased emphasis on: –Team working –Reflective learning www.medev.ac.uk

Advantages of Simulation Decreases risk to patients Ensures learning outcomes can be addressed Controlled, safe environment Complex tasks can be structured / staged Learning through doing Allows repeated practice Reliable assessment tool www.medev.ac.uk

How to make it real - fidelity 3 components of fidelity: – equipment: does the simulator duplicate reality? – environment: do the surroundings, visual and verbal cues duplicate reality? – psychological: does the trainee or student think this is like reality? Level of fidelity needed depends on learning outcome www.medev.ac.uk

SimBaby – what can it do? Realistic airway Pharyngeal swelling Laryngospasm Cyanosis Respiratory movements Recession Synchronised breath sounds SaO2 Pneumothorax / chest drain Apnoea Measures quality of ventilation Pulses (radial, femoral) with variable volume Heart sounds Blood pressure (manual) IV / IO Live defibrillation Cry / cough / vomit etc Variable fontanelle www.medev.ac.uk
