The City of Amarillo 2009 Efficient Yard Irrigation Challenge

Outdoor Watering National Average Residential Water Use Represents over 50% of Residential Water Use Source: AWWA

An Emphasis on Outdoor Irrigation

City of Amarillo Outdoor Watering Conservation Challenge Don’t Turn Your Lawn Into a “Wetland”

Tips for Watering “Right” 1.Water deeply and less often. Get the water to the root zone Twice a week is enough Only about an inch of water is needed a week to maintain a healthy lawn- the amount that would fill a tuna can. The average sprinkler system should run approximately 30 minutes for water to reach the deep root zone. Verify actual application rate using a lawn gauge or the tuna can method. 2.Water at the right time of day. 10 PM to 6 AM is best Not after 10 AM in any case 3.Do not water for several days after a good rain. 4.When we should not water. Not during the heat of the day Not during windy weather Not when it is raining Not during freezing weather Not when rain is predicted 5.Mow high and mow often Do not cut the grass too short (not less than 1½”) 6.Use mulch Helps retain moisture and control weeds 7.Fertilize only as needed. Proper use of fertilizer – not too much – refer to label information.
