2 T HE REASON FOR CHOOSING OBESITY As defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Indicators Warehouse (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2010) : Overweight is any adult with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 25 and 29.9 (CDC, 2010). Obese adults have a BMI of over 30 (National Health Indicators Warehouse, 2010). In Oregon it is estimated that 23% of adults were obese in 2009 (CDC, 2010). In Klamath County it is estimated that 24.7% of adults were obese in 2008 (CDC, 2010). 2008 Age-Adjusted Estimates of the Percentage of Adults Who Are Obese in Oregon by County (CDC, 2010).

3 W HAT CONTRIBUTES TO OBESITY ? According to Edelman and Mandel the following factors contribute to obesity (2010. p.297): Sedentary Lifestyle Genetics Age Decreased Physical Activity Poor Nutrition

4 C OMPLICATIONS OF OBESITY Obesity increases an individuals risk of developing other chronic health conditions such as (The Mayo Clinic, 2010): Hypertension Diabetes Mellitus Certain Cancers Depression Gallbladder Disease Heart Disease Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Metabolic Syndrome Stroke Sleep Apnea Physical Discomfort Sexual Dysfunction

5 E XERCISE B ENEFIT Regular physical exercise is effective in promoting and maintaining health and preventing disease. The following are among the benefits of regular physical activity (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2000): Decease BMI Increased muscle strength Increased endurance Increased flexibility Management of weight Prevention of colon cancer, stroke, and back injury Prevention and management of coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis, and depression
