2 History Clare Island Clare Island an entrance to Clew Bay in County Mayo, Ireland on the west coast of Ireland. Clare Island was a part of the O’Malley’s land. It is famous for the Grainne Castle, Cistercian Abbey, and the burial site for Grainne O’Malley. Grainne O’Malley was an Irish Pirate Queen. She achieved many things in her life including meeting Queen Elizabeth I. The Abbey possibly contains Grainne O’Malley’s tomb, and it is known for its rare roof paintings. The Spanish Armada was wrecked on Clare Island, and the Spanish men were killed by the O’Malley’s. The Clare Island Lighthouse was built in 1806 by John Denis Browne, and rebuilt on to in 1818 due a fire. After 159 years, it was replaced by the Achillbeg Island lighthouse. In 1909- 1911 a biological survey was taken place as a template for future studies. They studied the shores of Clare Island. The Island has a hotel, a school, a yoga and meditation centre, and a post office. The population of Clare Island is approximately 125.

5 Contemporary Application Today in Clare Island, you should expect to see many animals, a great view of the ocean, and many mountains. You can take tours to the O’Malley castle and the Lighthouse. Travelers can seagulls on the coast, cows walking in the streets, sheep grazing. There are not many people that live on the Island, but there are a lot of tourists.

8 History of Phoenix Park Phoenix Park is a park that is the largest enclosed park in any capital city in Europe. The park is 1, 760 acres. It was first established in 1662 by James Butler a Duke of Ormond. Wellington Testimonial in the park is 207 feet tall and it was built in 1747 by Robert Smirke. The Papal Cross was built in 1979 when Pope John Paul came to the park. The Magazine Fort was built in 1611 which was originally a lodge. It was added on in 1801 for troops. The Victorian People’s Garden was opened in 1864. It was a way to display Victorian horticulture. It has Ornamental lakes, children’s playground, and picnic areas. The Phoenix Monument was built in 1747 by the fourth Earl of Chesterfield. The park has gardens, nature trails, plenty of grasslands, trees. The park houses 700 animals that roam freely. There are over 351 different species of plants. Some plants are rare and protected by the keepers of the park. The residence of the President of Ireland (Áras an Uachtaráin) built in 1750 is located in the center of the park. There is an Ambassador’s Residence for the U.S. president.President of IrelandÁras an Uachtaráin There is an Ashtown Castle is the oldest building in the park and, it gives all the history info about the park. There is a restaurant in the park. The park opened in 1662. There are grand prix races, concerts, and big races that go on in the park. There is a zoo inside the Phoenix Park. It is one of the oldest zoos in the world, and it has been taking care of endangered and rare animals for 18 years.

12 Contemporary Application There is so much to do at Phoenix Park. Today many tourists walk around the park and watch the animals, take woodland walks, go to the Dublin zoo, or The People’s Flower Garden. Many go to the Wellington Testimonial or a prehistoric burial chamber that is over 5,500 years old. There is Papal Cross and the Magazine Fort to visit. Travelers can go to the Irish Pub, the Phoenix Café, and picnic areas. You visit the Phoenix Monument. You can explore ponds and the woods.
