Things to keep in mind – Topic Selection  Choose something that appeals to the entire group.  Consider your audience  Choose something you can cover adequately in the 5-10 minute time frame  Make sure your topic can be easily broken into the assigned format

Organizing your thoughts  Map out an outline  Stick to the 5 paragraph essay format  Know what kind of presentation you’re giving (informative, demonstrative, persuasive, etc)  Know what you are going to say  Know what your partners are going to say  Practice with your group ahead of time

Delivery  Start with a bang – Capture the audience’s attention.  Don’t be afraid to use note cards as queues for talking points.  Don’t stand in front of the class reading your material directly from your notes.

Visual Aids  Choose your medium carefully, make sure it maximizes the impact of your presentation.  Rehearse WITH your Visual Aids ahead of time.  Make sure any A/V equipment you need is working ahead of time.  Handouts – don’t give the whole presentation away at the beginning.  Power Point – Use an easily readable design

 This is a readable slide  The font contrasts well against the background  The associated picture is relevant to the topic  The slide is not overloaded with information

 This is a less readable slide  The words are difficult to make out and abrasive to the eyes  The slide is busy with information  The image has seemingly nothing to do with the topic  The silde has speling errors  The slide is overloaded with information  Oh my goodness, I can’t believe there’s another bullet point.  What are the presenters even talking about?

Reducing Anxiety  It is perfectly normal to be nervous before a presentation  Reduce Anxiety by: ◦ Choosing a topic you care about ◦ Rehearsing ◦ Being fully prepared ◦ Remembering you notice your own mistakes more than others ◦ Being yourself

Final Tips  Move around a bit  Don’t talk to fast – be sure to enunciate  Look at the crowd, not at your paper/notes/slideshow  Empty your pockets  Move your focus from person to person as you speak  Be mindful of the time  Have fun!

 Class release time to work on your presentation – USE IT ACCORDINGLY  Journal Entry due by 5:00 TUESDAY – In my Inbox or Email. ◦ Free Write  For your final journal entry, feel free to write about whatever you like, I strongly encourage you to reflect on your first semester in college. Were your expectations and reality different? Knowing what you know now, would you do something different? How will this semester impact you moving forward in life?  Last Week of Class – Presentations

 December 10th – 2:00-4:00  Optional  Multiple Choice  Study Guide will be provided via email.
