2 Author’s Purpose A purpose is the reason why someone does something.
First, you need to know what purpose (not porpoise) is? A purpose is the reason why someone does something.

3 Purpose: For example, the purpose of having a car is so that you can drive from place to place. The purpose of going to school is so that you can learn. The purpose of feeling pain is so that your body knows that you are hurt or not feeling well. There are many, many different purposes (not porpoises) for things.

4 What is the purpose of these things?
1. smoke alarm 2. fork 3. baseball bat

5 But, what is author’s purpose?
Author’s purpose is the reason why the author writes a story.

6 Authors write for three different reasons.
They are to persuade, inform and entertain.

8 What does each purpose mean?

10 Persuade: When authors try to get you to
do things, they are persuading you. They want you to think a certain way, do something or buy something. Television commercials have the purpose of persuasion. They want you to buy something.

11 What is this author’s purpose?

12 They want you to buy Stompeez!

13 How do you persuade? When you want to stay up late, you may persuade your parent to let you. You might say something like, “Mom, I don’t have school tomorrow”. You may say, “I’ve been waiting to see this new movie for months”. You are giving your parent reasons why they should let you stay up late to try to persuade them to let you.

14 Inform Information is all around you!
What would you like to be informed about?

15 Inform – give information
You have just been to the doctor. Before you leave, the nurse hands your parent some information on paper and maybe a prescription. This paper will inform you about how to get healthy.

16 Authors write because they want to give you information about a topic.

17 We use these kinds of books in school to learn about different things
We use these kinds of books in school to learn about different things. We read books about people, places and things. We read them to learn information about our world.

18 Authors write books to teach you things and so their purpose is to inform you. They are giving you information. History, Science, Math and Social Studies text books are all written with the purpose of giving the reader information about a topic.. Fun Fact: Text written with the purpose of informing is also called Informational Text!

19 How do you know it is informational text?
Informational texts are non-fiction books! These books can have: 1. Photographs Maps 3. Captions/Descriptions Diagram with Labels 5. Headings Table of Contents 7. Glossary Index

What kinds of books have you read that are informational texts? What topics would you like to learn about? How can you find informational texts on your topic of interest?

23 Authors sometimes just want to share stories so that others can enjoy them.
They want to share them with the world. The purpose is to entertain you.

24 Entertainment Author provokes feelings
May leave you wanting to see more Wants you to enjoy the experience of watching/reading/hearing the story Gets your attention and tries to hold on to it Keeps you interested

25 You watch videos or read books that are meant to entertain you all of the time.

28 We entertain! When you tell a story, you do it to entertain your friends or family. You want to share and you want your friends/family to listen to you.

29 Books to Movies Sometimes a book is so entertaining that it is turned into a movie. Many movies that we watch today were first books.
