2 ESMD SG Faculty Project Update Number of Applicants: 19 Space Grant Consortia Represented: Al, AZ, CA, DC, FL, GA, IA, NM, SD, TX, VA, WV, & WY Announcement of 5 Selected Faculty: March 19-23 Rotations: June 4-July 6; July 9-August 6; all faculty at KSC Aug 8-10 ARC-KSC; GRC-MSFC; LaRC-GSFC; JSC-SSC; JPL-DFRC Each faculty will attend a regional Space Grant meeting in 2007 to present their findings (report will be made available on PBMA) Hosting SGC please allot time on agenda Mission: Identify ESMD-related student internships & senior design projects Faculty stipends and incurred travel expenses will be paid by NASA A new NASA Educational Project will be initiated in the Summer of 2007. NASA’s ESMD (Exploration Systems Mission Directorate) has partnered with the National Space Grant Consortia to offer five university faculty an opportunity to spend a total of 10 weeks at 2 NASA Centers.

4 ESMD SG Student Project Update Systems Engineering Competition Intern Reports SG reporting PBMA ESMD Space Grant Student Opportunities 2007 Student Opportunities within the Vision for Space Exploration NASA’s Exploration Systems Mission Directorate is offering student opportunities related to Exploration in partnership with the National Space Grant Consortia. Please contact YOUR LOCAL SPACE GRANT CONSORTIUM for more specific information. Systems Engineering Paper All student teams participating in an ESMD funded national competition are eligible and invited to submit a paper Students will submit a Systems Engineering Paper to be evaluated by NASA judges First prize is a $2500 cash award and tickets for VIP seating at an upcoming launch Second prize is $1500 Third prize is $1000 Deadline for Spring 2007 SE paper submission is April 30, 2007 Student application information is available at http://education.ksc.nasa.gov/ESMDspacegrant/SystemsEngineering.htm Students will be required to sign up at the PBMA ESMD Space Grant site Instructions for signing up are on the website above, as well as detailed student instructions

5 ESMD SG Student Project Update PBMA One stop shopping – all ESMD info for Space Grant Consortia SG status reporting Working with HQ to ensure no duplication of reporting ESMD data to KSC, not to CMIS Semi annual – you will have time for inputs Needed to report metrics, evaluate the program and make improvements Metrics required for HQ funding decisions Student data needed interns, competitions, senior design Intern Reports – now online Student membership at PBMA required

6 ESMD SG Student Project Update Student applications closed for 2007 Relevant dates Applications close Feb 16, 2007 VSGC reviewed and mailed out SG passwords SGC to complete review by March 5 POC ranking - Complete by March 23 KSC notifies SG of final decisions by April 6 SG award to students on April 9 Generic application process flow on PBMA 180 applicants from 41 states “Extra” students available

7 ESMD SG Student Project Update Submit application to the Virginia Space Grant Consortium on: http://platinum.ts.odu.edu/esmdR200 7.nsf/VSGCMain?OpenPage Virginia Space Grant Consortium sends user names and passwords to Space Grants for approval of intern applications. NASA Technical POCs (NASA Mentors) are assigned user name and password to review and rank their relevant intern applications. NASA-KSC Education Office makes final selections. Space Grant Consortia, NASA technical POC, and affected center Education Office are notified. The State Space Consortium sends award letters to the students and provides any required logistics information, including stipend payment. Each center Education Office and Technical POC works with the students regarding logistics such as badging, security, and office arrangements.
