5. Unit 1 Read Aloud “Wilma Rudolph” Hard work and determination changed Wilma Rudolph’s life. As a child, she overcame double pneumonia, scarlet fever, and polio to regain the use of her left leg. To stay in college, Rudolph worked two hours a day, five days a week, in addition to training for the 1960 Olympic games. Rudolph was the first woman ever to win three gold medals in the Olympics and gave women’s track a strong boost in America. Rudolph paved the way for both male and female African-American athletes. The banquet and parade held in her honor were the first integrated events in her hometown of Clarksville, Tennessee. Wilma Rudolph became a legendary athlete and spokesperson for many organizations.
