2 space cadet a person who is always silly or giddy. He was such a space cadet that he forgot his gloves on the coldest day of the year.

3 American dream the notion that Americans are preoccupied with obtaining certain materialistic goals. The American dream of home ownership, a car in the garage, and a chicken in every pot started in the early thirties.

4 equal to the occasion Capable of handling the situation. Although the students were nervous about the test, the teachers knew they were equal to the occasion.
