Background  Born 1975 Morristown, New jersey  Lived in London for 7 years then returned to the U.S. to attend Columbia University in 1993.  Holds a Master’s and Doctorate in music composition from Columbia.  Has taught at Columbia, Princeton and NYU to name a few.  Known as a “Conceptual Artist”.

3. Hard Data  http://turbulence.org/Works/harddata/ http://turbulence.org/Works/harddata/  Data-mining, sonification, and visualization project that uses statistics from the American military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Timed with Iraq’s national anthem at the time.  Displays casualties on both sides at a certain points in the accompanying music.

4. Billboard  Took a “spectral average” of each song.  Played each average note for 1 second for each week song was at #1 on chart.  857 songs on the list at that time.

5. A More Perfect Union…  Changed all towns and cities in every state to the most common used word in online dating profiles originating from each particular town or city.  Here’s our area: Most common used words for our area are “Chimneys” and “Monkeys” for whatever reason.  Of course Richmond would be Tobacco.  The Quantico area: “Spies” and “Brethren”

6. Fashionably Late For The Relationship  Public performance of woman who takes her own sweet time getting ready for a date as the rest of the world advances 3 days.  Used extremely slow movements.  Act compressed in a video at 60 times normal speed.  Filmed on a traffic island near Union Square, NYC.

7. Questions?  Do the technical components of DuBois’ work detract from or add to the artistic aspect of his work?  Do works need to be understood to be appreciated?
