Germany sparks a new war in Europe...

The Start.. Germany’s invasion spread Planned to take over Poland (belonged to Germany before WW1) Great Britain and France was scared Asked for Stalin (Soviet Union) ‘s help but they had already made the “nonaggression pact” The “nonaggression pact” is when two countries agree not to attack each other. In any case, Stalin was excluded from Munich Conference, so he had no interest to join them. Secretly, Hitler and Stalin agreed to share Poland. Also, he promised to give USSR; Finland and the Baltic countries (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia)

Germany’s Lightning Attack on Poland Germany was safe from being attacked from the east, because they made a “nonaggression pact” with Soviet Union. So with this chance Germany attacked Poland (September 1, 1939) Germany invaded the Polish airspace, used raining bombs and created terror. Meanwhile on the ground, troop trucks and tanks were sent across the border. Each truck carried more than 1.5 million soldiers. Germany succeeded and capture the western half of Poland because It had a great population of Germans. Through this invasion, Germany gained new military strategy called “blitzkrieg” also called as “lightning war”. - used fast-moving airplanes, etc.

The Soviet make their move September 17; Stalin occupied eastern part of Poland. Stalin invaded Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia but Finland resisted… Why?

November 1939; Stalin sent nearly 1 million troops to Finland. He thought he would easily defeat them but he forgot about the “Finnish Winter” Although Finland lacked both people and military equipments, Soviets suffered walking through the deep snow and frost bites. But later Stalin won by the force of the numbers of his troops.

The Phony War When France and Britain saw Hitler and Stalin’s invasions, they mobilized their armies. France and Britain sent troops to the Maginot Line (a system of fortifications along France’s border with Germany). Germany did not attack; there were no movements made. They both were bored as they did nothing but stare at each other. Germany called this war the “sitzkried” or the “sitting war”. The newspapers called it as “the phony war” All of the sudden the phony war ended. Why?

April 9 1940; Hitler suddenly attacked Denmark and Norway for another invasion. This was because Hitler planned to build bases along coasts of Norway and Denmark to attack Great Britain. Denmark fell in 4 hours. Norway fell in 2 months.
