Unit Ten Emergency Procedures

 Part 1 Reading  Part 2 Dialogues  Part 3 Role Play  Part 4 Supplementary Materials Content

 Step 1 Basic information about emergency procedures  Step 2 New words and useful expressions  Step3 Group discussion Part 1 Reading

On-board an aircraft, the most important role of any crewmember is to ensure the safety of the passengers at all times. I. Safety Demonstration  Definition: A detailed explanation given before takeoff to airline passengers about the safety features of a commercial aircraft. Step 1 Emergency Procedures

 Form: On smaller aircraft (used for short haul domestic flights), usually 1 or 2 stewardesses will demonstrate the safety procedures while one CA reads out the safety information. On larger aircrafts (used for long haul or international flights), the passenger safety demonstration is performed through the aircrafts video system. I. Safety Demonstration

 Content:  a reminder to review the aircraft safety card  the use of the seat belt  the location and use of the emergency exits, evacuation slides and emergency floor lighting  the use of the oxygen mask  the location and use of the life vests, life rafts and flotation devices  the brace position  a reminder not to smoke on board  the precautions to take before take-off and landing I. Safety Demonstration

 Seatbelt: A seat belt, sometimes called a safety belt, is a safety harness designed to secure the occupant of a vehicle against harmful movement that may result from a collision or a sudden stop. II. Safety Demonstration Items

 Life Vest : The passengers’ life vests can be found stowed under their seats. The CA demonstrates how to wear and operate the life vest. At no time must the life vest be inflated inside the aircraft, as this will inhibit the exit of passengers in an emergency. II. Safety Demonstration Items

 Oxygen Mask: An oxygen mask provides a method to transfer breathing oxygen gas from a storage tank to the lungs. Oxygen masks may cover the nose and mouth (oral nasal mask) or the entire face (full face mask). They may be made of plastic, silicone, or rubber. II. Safety Demonstration Items

 Evacuation slide : An evacuation slide is an inflatable slide used to evacuate an aircraft quickly. An escape slide is required on all commercial (passenger carrying) aircraft where the door sill height is such that, in the event of an evacuation, passengers would be unable to "step down" from the door uninjured. II. Safety Demonstration Items

An aircraft safety card is a document instructing passengers on an aircraft about the procedures for dealing with various emergency conditions that might arise during the flight. The safety cards are usually provided by airlines on all commercial flights, usually located in the back of the seat in front of each passenger. III. Passenger Safety Card

 Sample : III. Passenger Safety Card

Sometimes aircrafts have to fly over large expanses of water; therefore, an emergency life raft is necessary. Upon ditching, the life rafts are thrown out through the passenger and service doors and open automatically upon hitting the water. Aviation Life Rafts are generally light weight bag stored life rafts. IV. Life Rafts

The aircraft brace position is primary for minimizing the chance of your head flying off and making identification of bodies easier. V. Brace Position

If the aircraft is about to make an emergency landing, adopt the brace position, and stay there until the aircraft comes to a complete stop - there may be more than one jolt. V. Brace Position

 Cabin Crew Brace Position After checking all the passengers have adopted the correct brace position, it is essential that the CA’s take up their own brace positions. If a CA sits in a forward facing jump seat, he should sit with his chin resting on his chest. But if he sits in a rear facing jump seat, the head should be upright so that the back of his head is resting against the head restraint. V. Brace Position

Step 2 Words and Expressions

 Requirements: Students are required to read the text quickly and discuss with group mates to find the correct answers to the following questions. The performance of the group members will be credited. Step3 Group Discussion

 What’s the most important role of the cabin crew?  Name as many items as you can that form a part of the emergency equipment  What does the passenger safety card tell the passenger?  Where can a passenger find his lift vest?  What is the correct brace position for a CA? Questions:

 Situation 1 Preparing for Emergency Ditching  Situation 2 Checking the Brace Position  Situation 3 Evacuating the Aircraft  Situation 4 Do not Inflate Your Life Vest inside the Cabin Part 2 Dialogues

 Please remain seated and keep your seatbelt fastened. I’ll take the life vest from the overhead compartment for you.  Please pull the tabs down as soon as you are out of the cabin, NOT inside the cabin.  Your life vest is under your seat. Situation 1 Preparing for Emergency Ditching

 I’m sorry, but you must bend over more and place your head between your knees.  Try holding the back of the seat in front of you and place your head between your arms…quickly now! Situation 2 Checking the Brace Position

 Everyone kneel down on the floor and follow him to the exit.  Everyone kneel down on the floor and follow the emergency floor lighting. It will guide you to the exit.  Hold onto the person in front of you, sir, and follow him to the exit. Situation 3 Evacuating the Aircraft

 If all passengers inflate their life vests, there will be no room inside the cabin.  Please keep your head down and hold your ankles. Situation 4 Do not Inflate Your Life Vest inside the Cabin

 Group work: Students are required to divided into small groups and perform the role-play based on the following topics. Credits will be granted according to the performance of each group. Part 3 Role Play

 Topics: 1. Preparing for emergency ditching 2. Sitting next to an over-wing exit 3. Evacuating the aircraft 4. Collecting sharp items 5. Checking the brace positions Part 3 Role Play

 让乘客做好紧急迫降的准备: Fasten your seat belts immediately. The plane will make an emergency landing because of the sudden breakdown of an engine.  乘客出现慌乱时: Don’t panic! Our captain has full confidence to land safely. All the crew members of this flight are well trained for this kind of situation. Part 4 Supplementary Materials

 告诉乘客如何使用救生衣: Take out the life vest from under your seat and put it on! Don’t inflate the life vest in the cabin and as soon as you leave the aircraft, inflate it by pulling down the red tab.  告诉乘客使用氧气罩: Put the mask over your face! Let me show you how to use the oxygen masks. Part 4 Supplementary Materials
