We all know that seatbelts reduces the probability of death and also protects against injuries in rollovers or side crashes, but there are a few drivers that still take it for granted. 2 Transportation Tuesday Im just driving around the corner and wont be driving fast, so I dont really need my seatbelt. You may be familiar with the roads in the area but you can never predict the unexpected. My seatbelt is too tight and very uncomfortable. Seatbelts are designed not just for your safety but for your comfort as well. If you move forward a little, the belt stretches and adjusts to your position. A device locks the seatbelt during a collision. Once you get used to wearing your seatbelt, over time it actually feels uncomfortable not wearing one. Im a good driver. Even the best drivers in the world and experienced racers wear their seatbelts because they are not sure when they might meet with an accident. The common misconceptions about seatbelts

3 Transportation Tuesday The common misconceptions about seatbelts If I wear my seatbelt, it will trap me in my vehicle. This may apply when a vehicle rolls over or strikes water. However, if you are not wearing your seatbelt, you are more likely to be thrown around in your vehicle and knocked unconscious. This will definitely trap you in your vehicle. My vehicle has an airbag. Airbags are supplementary and in order to achieve the benefit of an airbag, you must use your seatbelt. If you dont wear your seatbelt, you could easily bounce off your airbag and be thrown around in your vehicle.

4 Transportation Tuesday The proper way to use your seatbelt The part of the belt that goes across your lap should be positioned below your stomach and across your hips. The shoulder belt should go across your chest and collarbone. The belt should not be placed across your neck or under your arm. wear the lower belt across your stomach as it can lead to serious injuries. place the shoulder belt behind your back as you need both sections of the belt to prevent an injury. Without the shoulder belt, injuries to the head and chest are likely. wear the belt under your arm- by doing so, the belt is placed across your ribs. Your ribs can get seriously injured in a collision.

5 Transportation Tuesday Make sure your children are safe Driving is dangerous, so its important to make sure children are safe. Buy the right car seat according to your childs weight. Use the instructions when setting the seat in your vehicle. Infants should face the rear of the vehicle, until they are 20 pounds or a year old. This will prevent spine injuries in case of a collision. Fit the seat properly and make sure the seat is secured at the back. Take time to get the child comfortably strapped in. Never let a child out of the car seat while driving even if the child is crying. Stop at a safe place to attend your childs needs. Pregnant women should use seatbelt extenders.
