3   Third largest railroad system developed. Made India’s economy more modern  British built telephone, telegraph wires and dams, bridges and canals  Improved sanitation and public health and built hospitals Benefits of British Rule

4   Wealth flowed from India to Britain  Farmers forced to grow cash crops (like cotton), not food. They were starving.  Indians not allowed to compete with British industries. 6   By mid 1800s, Indians resented British control  Sepoys rebelled, took East India Company a year to put it down.  Sepoy rebellion failed due to:  Weak leadership  Failure of Muslim and Hindu Sepoys to unite  After rebellion, British take direct control of India  Beginning of Raj, period of British rule from 1857-1947 Sepoy Mutiny The “greased” cartridges that started a war…

7  Indians resisted British control in other ways.  Nationalist feelings grew because:  British officials discriminated against them  Indians barred from best jobs in civil service  British workers paid more than Indian workers for same job Indian Nationalist Movements Begin

8   New leader, Ram Mohun Roy  well educated  called for end of traditional practices and ideas (like widow burning and child marriage)  wanted to make India more modern and free India of British control  Felt if India westernized, it could resist control by outsiders  Indian National Congress forms in 1885  Muslim League forms in 1906  Both groups call for self government Indian Nationalist Groups Form
