MARK’S GOSPEL THE SIMPLICITY AND POWER OF JESUS

The New Wine of the Kingdom Mark 2:18-22

Review 1.Jesus came into the region of the Sea of Galilee preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom. 2.He has been preaching and ministering in God’s authority and power. 3.Jesus has returned to Capernaum.

Geographical Setting

Mark 2:18–22 (ESV) Old Wine or New? Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”

And the Lord God says, “I told you so…” Isaiah 43:15–19 (NLT): I am the LORD, your Holy One, Israel’s Creator and King. I am the LORD, who opened a way through the waters, making a dry path through the sea. I called forth the mighty army of Egypt with all its chariots and horses. I drew them beneath the waves, and they drowned, their lives snuffed out like a smoldering candlewick. “But forget all that — it is nothing compared to what I am going to do. For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.

In Jesus Christ Everything can become “New Wine” Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)

But Wait … There’s More… 2 Corinthians 5:18–20a (NKJV): Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ …

There is More… The Lord is Doing Something New… The Question is this: Will we choose to be part of what He is doing?

APPLICATION 1.What does it mean for us to live as His New creation? 2.What does it look like for us to each live out the ministry of reconciliation? 3.In what ways do we need to bust through the barriers that keep those around us from feeling included, loved, welcome, at home? 4.How can we prepare ourselves to perceive and receive whatever new thing God wants to do in our midst and any new wine He wants to pour out on us?
