The Sacrament of Holy Communion What do we receive in the Lord’s Supper?

Question 1 How was the Lord’s Supper instituted?

Matthew 26:17-29 1 Corinthians 11:23-25 1 Corinthians 10:16 Key Point 1 1 Corinthians 11:23-28 Luke 1:37 Key Point 2 sacred act instituted by Jesus we eat bread and drink wine we repeat Jesus’ words bread and wine body and blood Jesus said so nothing is impossible with God Key Point 3 Matthew 26:26-29

Matthew 26:17-29 17 On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?" 18He replied, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, 'The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.' " 19So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover. 20When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21And while they were eating, he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me." 22They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, "Surely not I, Lord?" 23Jesus replied, "The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. 24The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born." 25Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, "Surely not I, Rabbi?" Jesus answered, "Yes, it is you." 26While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body." 27Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. 28This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom."

1 Corinthians 11:23-25 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me."

Key Point 1 The Lord’s ______ was instituted by _____ when he told his _______ to eat _____ and drink ____ while also using the _____ he spoke. Supper Jesus disciples bread wine words

Question 2 What do we receive with our mouths when we participate in the Lord’s Supper?

Matthew 26:26-29 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body." Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom."

1 Corinthians 10:16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?

Key Point 2 We receive the true ____ and _____ of our Lord Jesus Christ, together with the _____ and ____, in a miraculous Holy __________. body blood bread wine Communion

Question 3 How do we know that Jesus’ body and blood are really present in this sacrament?

1 Corinthians 11:23-28 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.

Luke 1:37 For nothing is impossible with God.

Key Point 3 We know that Jesus’ ____ and _____ are really in this _________ because Jesus clearly states it and nothing is _________ for him to do. body blood sacrament impossible

What I’ve Learned Holy Communion is a sacred act in which Jesus gives us his true body and blood in, with, and under bread and wine.
