1 The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow 周剑鸣

2 The reasons I choose this poem……

3 The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls
The tide rises, the tide falls, The twilight darkens, the curlew calls; Along the sea-sands damp and brown The traveler hastens toward the town, And the tide rises, the tide falls. Darkness settles on roofs and walls, But the sea, the sea in the darkness calls; The little waves, with their soft, white hands, Efface the footprints in the sands, And the tide rises, the tide falls. The morning breaks; the steeds in their stalls Stamp and neigh, as the hostler calls; The day returns, but nevermore Returns the traveler to the shore, And the tide rises, the tide falls.

5 Grammar The tide rises, the tide falls, The twilight darkens, the curlew calls; Along the sea-sands damp and brown The traveler hastens toward the town, And the tide rises, the tide falls. Along the damp and brown sea-sand The sea calls in the darkness But the traveler nevermore returns to the shore

6 The First Stanza:Sunset
The tide rises, the tide falls, The twilight darkens, the curlew calls; Along the sea-sands damp and brown The traveler hastens toward the town, And the tide rises, the tide falls.

7 The Second Stanza:Night
Darkness settles on roofs and walls, But the sea, the sea in the darkness calls; The little waves, with their soft, white hands, Efface the footprints in the sands, And the tide rises, the tide falls.

8 The Third Stanza:Sunrise
The morning breaks; the steeds in their stalls Stamp and neigh, as the hostler calls; The day returns, but nevermore Returns the traveler to the shore, And the tide rises, the tide falls. By placing three stanzas in this order, Longfellow is implying that the time is not something “evil” or “frightening,” but rather is a “hopeful” occurrence.

12 General Theme 苏轼《赤壁赋》 One should recognize death and live a meaningful life for all the time one has left, to strive, to seek, to find and not to yield. Death is certain, one cannot escape it and this should be appreciated and respected, not wallowed in or feared.
