SETURI – a Finnish Burden of Disease project on environmental stressors WHO EBD Kick off meeting Feb 13th, 2009 Olli Leino National Institute for Health and Welfare Olli.Leino@thl.fi

Background In 2006, we carried out a study 1 to analyze exposures to environmental stressors in Finland The SETURI –project carries on assessing burden of disease for an extented list of environmental stressors in Finland 1 Suomalaisten altistuminen kemiallisille aineille ja säteilylle. Ympäristö ja terveys. 10/2006.

Partners National Institute for Health and Wellfare Finnish Institute of Occupational Health Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority Finnish Food Safety Authority

Objectives To rank health risks due to environmental stressors in Finland using:  Mortality  DALYs Selection criterias for environmental stressors  Public health  Public concern  High individual risk (occupational exposures)  Economical importance Results comparable with other countries

Nature of data used Epidemiological  Used when data is available Toxicological  Used for exposures without sufficient epidemiologial data Registery data  Used to include reference health issues such as accidents

Main outcomes A national seminar (in Helsinki, Oct 13th 2009) Several research articles in a national journal ’Environment & Health’ Peer reviewed articles in scientific journals

List of exposures Accidents (incl. traffic, occupational) Acrylamide Alcohol Arsenic Asbestos Benzene Chernobyl accident Chloriantion by-products CO poisonnings Damp housing Dioxins Environmenatal tobacco smoke Fine particles Food additives Food born epidemics Formaldehyde Led in the environment Methanol Methylmercury Nickel Noise Occupational asthma Occupational cancers Pesticides Quartz dust Radon radiation Solarium use UV radiation Water born epidemics Wood dust Various chemicals…

Public health relevance Accidents (incl. traffic, occupational) Acrylamide Alcohol Arsenic Asbestos Benzene Chernobyl accident Chloriantion by-products CO poisonnings Damp houses Dioxins Environmenatal tobacco smoke Fine particles Food additives Food born epidemics Formaldehyde Led in the environment Methanol Methylmercury Nickel Noise Occupational asthma Occupational cancers Pesticides Quartz dust Radon radiation Solarium use UV radiation Water born epidemics Wood dust Various chemicals…
