Program “Less is more” Topic: Sustainable and safe production in agriculture and horticulture NWO divisions: Earth and Life Sciences, Chemical Sciences, FOM Budget: M€ 2 Themes Yield from agricultural and horticultural products Resilience of the production system Optimal utilisation of raw materials for food and non-food products Sustainable protein production Status 48 proposals -> decisions on granting expected July 2013 BBE @ NWO

Program “TA Biomass” Topic: Eco-efficient Use of Biomass for Bulk and Fine Chemicals NWO division: Chemical Sciences Budget: M€ 3 Collaboration: PPP (€: 67% government / 33% industry) Enabling conditions for SME’s (can contribute largely in kind) Themes Making biomass based biocatalytic, chemocatalytic and thermochemical processes compatible Produce existing chemical intermediates in an eco-efficient way from biomass Develop process for the conversion of recalcitrant biomass fractions Status 5 projects granted BBE @ NWO

Program in cooperation with Brazil Aim: Collaboration in biobased economy NL-Brazil NWO divisions: Chemical Sciences, Earth and Life Sciences Budget: M€ 2 Themes Crop improvement: more and better agricultural, horticultural and aquaculture products Sustainable agriculture: resilience of the production system; Biorefinery Chemocatalytical, biocatalytical and thermochemical conversion of biomass to fuels and chemicals. Status 19 proposals -> decisions on granting expected November 2013 BBE @ NWO

Partnership program with Paques Topic: A Novel Platform Technology for the Conversion of Waste Biomass to Renewable Bioproducts NWO divisions: STW, Chemical Sciences Budget: M€ 3 Collaboration: PPP (€: 50% government / 50% Paques) Focus Develop an in-depth understanding of the fermentation of organic material to VFA (volatile fatty acids) under non-sterile conditions Develop efficient methods to recover VFA from fermentation broths Develop novel processes for the efficient conversion of VFA to renewable biobased products Status 5 projects granted BBE @ NWO

Pipeline For 2012/2013 up till now NWO invested ~M€ 10 in BBE under the top sector policy. Investments in BBE will further increase, since: Numbers on curiosity driven research (talent schemes and response-mode research) will appear by the end of 2013. The Fund New Chemical Innovations is still open. Next ‘deadline’ for submitting projects: 24 September 2013 BBE @ NWO
