Historical Background  In 1956, Basin F was constructed by the Army in the northeast section of RMA in Colorado.  It was designed as an open evaporation pond to receive various manufacturing wastes.  The Basin F had a surface area of 93 acres and a capacity of approximately 243 million gallons.  In 1982, the Basin F was stopped using by the Army.

Historical Background Contd… The contaminants in wastes in Basin F from 1957 to 1982: Organochloric and organophosphoric pesticides and metals e.g: Ardrin; Dieldrin; Vapona; Copper; Zinc; Arsenic

Hazards of The Contaminants  The chemicals could produce an enormous amount of hazardous on: 1. Soil 2. Water 3. Air  In 1957, hundreds of waterfowl died after landing in open waste ponds.  In 1962, farmers began to report unexplained sickness : extensive crop damage; foliage turned yellow, plants failed to mature and many crops were killed outright

Solutions -- Improvement of Basin F  March 1988, Interim Response Action(IRA) : improved the wastes holding tanks to enlarge the capacity and set up the incinerator  September 1988, Part Two of Basin F IRA initiated for characterization of liquid waste, selection of treatment alternative, testing of treatment technology, design of treatment process.  May 1988 – December 1988, Part One of Basin F IRA conducted which was for removal and temporary storage of wastes.  May 1988 – June 1988, a heavy rainfall and a tornado affected the structure and equipment of Basin F. Remediation Part One Remediation Part Two

Solutions -- Treatment Technology  Primary Treatment Technology: Submerged quench incineration system including: 1. Atomizing liquid injection system 2. Submerged quench incinerator 3. Quench chamber 4. Spray dryer 5. a venturi scrubber for particulate matter control 6. a packed-tower scrubber for acid neutralization 7. a residuals handing facility

Solutions -- Treatment Technology Contd...  Supplemental Treatment Technology: Post treatment (air): 1. High-energy venturi scrubber for particulate matter control 2. Packed tower caustic scrubber for acid neutralization of the exhaust gases

Conclusion  In May 1996, SQI finished and decommissioned, it was dismantled and sold for parts.  The environmental problems had been reduced since 1996. However, there are still restricted area which are not suitable for human activities.

Thank you for listening Any questions?
