2 NORMAN INVASION People Normans decedents of Vikings Who is William the Conqueror? Duke of Normandy Led the Normand Invasion Was promised the throne Who is King Edward the Confessor? The current King Died and gave throne to brother in law Who is Harold Godwineson the Earl of England(Brother in Law) Given power after death of Edward The earl of Wessex

3 WHY DID IT HAPPEN William was promised the throne Kingdom was given to Harold after death of king Edward William believed throne was rightfully his With broken promise he raise support for an army of mercenary soldiers

4 DURING NORMAN INVASION Battle of Hastings… Landed in England in the end of September of 1066 in Pevensey Led army of 7000 of cavalry and infantry Battle Happened in October 14 Killed King and defeats inexperience army of 7000 With victorious army marched to London defeating small resistances on the way

5 WHAT HAPPENED AFTER? King William the First - Become king on Christmas -Builds Castles to maintain control of military Under Norman rule - Language changes to French -Courts and Church changes to Latin

8 FEUDALISM CONTINUED Domeday book – survey of England ordered by King William -It consists of people and their jobs -Who owned the land -How much it was worth and how large the land was -What was on the land -Livestock -agriculture grown All for taxation purposes

12 LEADERS OF DYNASTY Broken up many times into cadet branches. -must be direct decedent of Hugh -Robert II of France -Henry I of France -Louis VI of France -Louis VIII of France -Louis IX of France -Philip III of France
