Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I. Old Stuff… 3 of 3 Chronological but Random Copyright © 2003 - 2009 Kenji Tachibana

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 3 of 3 / Random2002 - 2003 Photography as Meditate: Recently I was feeling tired and burned out. So, I meditated by doing a major ‘file management‘ update on my laptop and 6 external USB hard drives. That in-turn led to reworking some very old digital images. They were mostly 3 mega-pixel dgital images captured using the Nikon Prosumer compact digital camera, Coolpix 5000 and 5400 back in 2002 to 2003.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 3 of 3 / Random2002 - 2003 4 Your Eyes Only: This designer chair was found in a store that sell designer glasses in the Wallingford Center. The designer rug is also very cool. And it made a wonderful background for the chair. This image is already crop-framed in black and fully processed.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 3 of 3 / Random2002 - 2003 Composition: Soft symmetry The subject is optically centered in the frame while being encircled by an arc and many lines. Most of the lines are actual but some are implied. There are lines aligned to the edge but many are diagonals. Notice that the right side has more negative space. That follows the standard rule about having more space in front of the object…

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 3 of 3 / Random2002 - 2003 Face & Face Direction: Even object, in fact, most objects have a face side. For a chair, the yellow arrow shows which direction the chair is facing. And the first face direction rule is to give more negative space (background) to the face direction side. This rule, like any other rule, can be broken but there must be a story based valid reason for breaking the ‘comfortable’ rule.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 3 of 3 / Random 2002 - 2003 Optical Illusion: This simple image is intended to look symmetrical with the top floor window in the optical center. In fact, the image is not symmetrical and the focal point window is near the physical center.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 3 of 3 / Random 2002 - 2003 Intentional Moves I am playing with the ideas visual illusion: 1.Symmetry vs. asymmetry. 2.Playing and optical center. 3.Light vs. dark sides. 4.Highlight vs. shadow sides. 5.Partial vs. full drawing. 6.Horizon line heights. When written as a list, it sounds too complicated. In practice, it happens very fast.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 3 of 3 / Random 2002 - 2003 Back to Cables: Some subjects are already quite B&W looking. I pushed the B&W look & feel in the lab work process.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 3 of 3 / Random 2002 - 2003 Joke Headline: The headline came to me as a spur-of- the-moment thing. So far, only a few students have enjoyed the joke…

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 3 of 3 / Random 2002 - 2003 Found Joke: Another Kodak moment found during my exercise walk in Madison Valley. It made an impact on my funny bone… Camera original.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 3 of 3 / Random 2002 - 2003 Lab Worked: While applying the basic processing, I ‘saw’ what changes to make in order to add to the visual joke. I used the ‘Liquify’ command found under Menu > Filter to push the ‘impact quake’ joke idea…

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 3 of 3 / Random 2002 - 2003 Table Top: Product Shot Lighting class demo shot using a white seamless background. The lighting is mainly from a 2’x2’ top-backlight source mounted on a heavy duty studio camera stand on wheels. Both white and black reflector cards were used to balance the light.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 3 of 3 / Random 2002 - 2003 Importance of Scale: The yellow pencil is an ubiquitous object perfect for small subject scaling purposes.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 3 of 3 / Random 2002 - 2003 Shop Opening: Found situation at the Pike Place Market. I was on my way to teach an early morning class at The Seattle Art Institute. Huge amount of image editing went into MAKING this image.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 3 of 3 / Random 2002 - 2003 Assignment: Point This combines a Point design idea with a story which is making a Point. The fountain pen is an old fashion writing tool so the image is delivered in sepia tone.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 3 of 3 / Random2002 - 2003 Importance of Attitudes and Paying the Dues: Please stop thinking like a student. Start being a Student. The capital ‘S’ Student is interested in learning the subject with the full understanding that the classroom is only a small part of the learning process. And that 90% of the sweet must come from the student.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 3 of 3 / Random2002 - 2003 Taking in the Wider Scope: To become good at story telling, the Student must become informed about many different kinds of things. Simply put, the more you know, the better story teller you can become. It helps to know that Seattle, Washington, USA, North America is not the center of the Universe…
