4 Pre-AP Classes Pre-AP –math, rela, science, and social studies –Homework expectations are higher in Pre-AP. –Greater depth and complexity –Math Pre-AP moves at a faster pace to prepare students for Algebra in 8 th grade

5 Rela Pre-AP Summer reading required (will be on KMS website) Summative assessment over this book during the 1 st six weeks 6 th grade RELA PreAP book will be announced before the summer and posted on KMS website.

6 Math and Reading Strategies –Placement based on 5 th grade data & STAAR scores –Determined by academic lead teachers, counselors, principals, etc.

7 Tutoring 8:00-8:25AM and 4:00-4:25PM MONDAY-Reading/Language Arts (RELA) TUESDAY-Math WEDNESDAY-Science THURSDAY PM ONLY-Social Studies FRIDAY AM ONLY-Social Studies

8 Elective Choices Year long electives (both semesters) –Band –Orchestra –Choir –AVID Fine Arts Composite –Art (one semester) –Theater Arts (one semester)

9 KMS Band Year long elective Director: Mr. Fennell Begins in 6 th grade Concerts Do not buy an instrument before meeting with Mr. Fennell.

10 KMS Orchestra Year long elective Director – Mr. Hale Begins in 6 th grade Concerts Instrument Selection: Do not buy an instrument before meeting with Mr. Hale.

11 KMS Choir Choir lasts all year (2 semesters) Ms. Fulford is our choir director. Beginning Choir is designed to introduce students to individual and group vocal productions. Students will perform at various concerts, community events, and competitions throughout the year.

12 Fine Arts Composite Art - Lasts one semester - Can also be taken in 7 th and 8 th grade beginning class - Prerequisite for advanced art classes. Theater Arts –Lasts one semester –Can also be taken in a 7 th and 8 th grade intro class –Class productions

13 What is AVID? AVID stands for A dvancement V ia I ndividual D etermination “AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.” Because an AVID student is in a program that requires a multitude of resources from the school and district, we expect a multitude of diligence, effort, time and academic success from our AVID students.

14 What is AVID? AVID stands for A dvancement V ia I ndividual D etermination It is a college-preparatory program designed to prepare students performing in the academic middle who have the potential to succeed in rigorous courses, but may be underachieving in level- classes. AVID students must be enrolled in at least one pre- AP class. (PreAP Math is required) It is for students who want to take Advanced Placement or Dual-Credit classes in high school. It is for students who have the desire and determination to do their best in school and become leaders! It is for students who want to attend a four-year college or university.

15 What is AVID? AVID stands for A dvancement V ia I ndividual D etermination What do I do if I am interested in applying for AVID? 1.Stop by the AVID table during parent information night for handouts and an application 2.Go to the Kingwood Middle website for an AVID application and information 3.If interested, you and your child complete the AVID application and return it to your elementary counselor. Someone from KMS will pick up the applications from the elementary campus. 4.Decisions for acceptance into the AVID program will be made before May of this year.

16 PE All 6 th graders take one year of PE. Separate from 7 th and 8 th grade PE Showers are recommended, but not required. PE uniform should be labeled with student’s name. Belongings should be locked in student’s locker. Do not share locker combination with anyone!

Students may study in the cafeteria. Doors reopen at 9:45.

24 Planning Guide The Middle School Planning Guide provides information about Humble ISD’s policies and procedures and describes the different courses offered at the Middle School level. The Planning Guide is available on-line – check KMS or district website.

25 Student Registration Card Front Elective choices Return to 5 th Grade teacher by February 13, 2015 June 10th - Deadline to make changes

26 Back 5th grade teachers determine placement based on District criteria. Parent may request a change in placement, circle and initial the choice. Refer to curriculum handbook for questions. Student and Parent should sign the elective card.

27 6th Grade Orientation Student Orientation is held prior to the first day of school. Our 6th grade students get acquainted with KMS, and parents are encouraged to attend. Watch the KMS web for Student Orientation! Students receive the following: –Schedule, books, PE uniforms, locker shelves –Locker assignment and combination –Lunch keypad number

31 School Wide Binders 3 inch binder Pencil bag Planner Dividers for each class

32 Lockers All students are assigned lockers. Do not share combinations with anyone! Practice working a combination lock this summer. An organized locker leads to success.

33 KMS Cafeteria Information Hot Lunch Regular lunch tray - choose 1 of 2 entrees, 2 veggies or fruits with home made roll and milk Basket Line Choose 1 of 2 entrees French Fries, Fruit, Milk, Salad or Sub Snack Bar Everything from chips to malts and candy bars

34 Please learn to work a combination lock (Master brand) over the summer. You will receive a locker assignment and combination during orientation, and you need to memorize these numbers! Each student will have a lunch keypad number like they had in elementary school. Students are to keep backpacks in their locker. Forgotten items may be delivered to the front office before 6 th grade lunch, and they will be delivered to you during lunch.
