1 Direction of Play What is it? How does this affect players on ice? Line Changes (aka Ingress/Egress)? What area of ice is my responsibility?

2 Basic Ice Hockey Positions Explained Goalie (G): Job is to keep the puck out of the net. Defensemen: A team at full strength has two — one on LEFT side (LD) and another on RIGHT side (RD). There are 3 primary kinds of defensemen: – Offensive-minded; Creative and likes to handle the puck and lead the team up ice, but is not too physical. – Defensive-minded; Stay-at-home who doesn’t venture out of zone with puck. – Those rare athletes who are a combination of the two. Right Wing (RW): Works the RIGHT side of the ice [for the most part]. – Needs to be a physical player who is good along the boards and in the corner. – Responsible for the opposition’s left defenseman in the defensive zone. Left Wing (LW): Traditionally a left-handed shot, but the NHL is seeing more right-handers playing this position now – Responsible for the opposition’s right defenseman in the defensive zone. – Needs to be able to dig out puck from corners and battle in front of the net. Center (C): Quarterbacks the team at both ends of the ice. – Supports both Wings in Attacking Zone and supports D-men in Defensive Zone – Must be good at face-offs and passing, and has a lot of hockey smart

3 What is Direction of Play???? Direction of Play simply means which way WE need the puck to go on the ice… – We change sides every period. – One period we're Defending a zone, the next period we're Attacking it! Direction of Play depends on which net our Goalie is minding. – ALL references on the ice are with respect to OUR Goalie! – Our Goalie is always in the Defending Zone. – Opposing Goalie is always the Attacking Zone. – Direction of Play for us is to always be moving the puck away from OUR Goalie (i.e., towards Attacking Zone).
