3 Bullying Definition Repeated aggression (verbal, physical) toward a certain person over time Done on purpose Does harm or disturbs a person

4 Roles in Bullying The bully---person who bullies Victim---person who gets bullied Bystanders---people who hear, see or know about the bullying attempt

5 Types of Bullying Physical---hit, kick, push, attack Verbal---name calling, teasing, mean comments Social bullying---to leave out, spread rumors, to gossip, make ethnic remarks, to embarrass others, mean gestures

6 Why People Bully To feel important To get power To get what they want They think they are better than others Think others are against them

7 Characteristics of Bullies Do not understand others Do not have compassion Do not like to follow rules Have few friends Are easily frustrated Have hot headed personalities Maybe depressed

8 How to Respond to Bullying Attempts Step 1: Think Calmly About My Bullying Facts and a Peaceful Picture 1. It is not my fault that I am the target of this bullying attempt. 2. The student who is bullying me is out of control. 3. I am not the only student who is bullied

9 How to Respond to Bullying Attempts Step 2: Say One Sentence Well Keep all body parts to myself Stand straight with my head up Use a steady voice Keep a safe distance Walk away after one sentence

10 How to Respond to Bullying Attempts Step 3: Report the Bullying Attempt to An Adult Where the bullying occurred When the bullying occurred Who did the bullying What was said during the bullying

11 How to Help if Someone is Being Bullied Refuse to join in Tell an adult that some is being bullied Be a friend to the person who was bullied by showing him (or her) that you care about him (or her) Invite the person being hurt to join your group Speak out using an “I” message. Say, “I don’t like it when you treat_______ like that.” “I want you to stop calling ____that name.”
