2 Early Reforms And Campaigns  For this lesson, we are interested to know  What the early reforms and campaigns introduced by CPC from 1949-1957 were The reforms and campaigns can be categorized as either political, social and economic  Impact of these reforms and campaigns on the people in China

3 Political Reforms  New system of government with three separate but parallel strands  The State bureaucracy at national, regional and local levels  The Communist Party at national, regional and local levels  The People's Liberation Army  Introduction of party branches at every level of administration – state, provinces, cities, districts and villages

4 Political Reforms  The most powerful political appointment in China may not be the State President/Chairman but the leader of the Communist Party of China  The leader of the Communist Party of China may either be the Secretary-General or the Chairman  From Deng Xiaoping’s period till today, the most powerful political leader in China is the Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the CPC

5 Political Reforms  One question for you to ponder at the end of this unit is whether there was a complete revolution of the political system or was the change merely cosmetic, ie. new wine in an old bottle.

6 Social Reforms  What were the social reforms introduced by the Communist Party of China, 1949-1957?  Gender equality, for example Marriage Act  Improvements in education  Improvements in public health  Land reforms Confiscation  redistribution (private land ownership)  cooperatives  collectives (state owned land)

7 Worksheet  The purpose of the worksheet is to further enhance the skill of  Elaborating on a point or claim  Illustrating a point or claim with specific historical evidence

8 Worksheet  Fill up the boxes with evidences of how the reforms were introduced and implemented  You are to refer to your notes on China as well as information from the BBC documentary, “China: A Century of Revolution”
