About immigration to the U.S Immigration to the United States has been a key source of population growth and cultural change throughout much of the history of the United States. America has often been called the land of immigrants because of the huge numbers coming to the country each year.

Effects of Immigration to the United States – wages and available jobs One effect would be on wages and available jobs, because many of immigrants are willing to work for a small salary, they have a negative impact on the wages if the U.S citizens. The effects of immigration on wages are hard to separate from other factors that have negative effects on wages like new technologies and economic recessions.

Effects of Immigration to the United States – Politics  Illegal immigration is a divisive topic in American politics.  It is a well debated topic, it reinforces existing division within American political society such as the Democratic Party and the Republican Party.  Illegal immigration may lead to conflict between overpopulated border states and other states.

Effects of Immigration to the United States – Economic  Immigration actually benefits the American economy and keeps it functioning because many of the immigrants are willing to work in low paid jobs that some Americans are not willing to work for.  A quarter of all engineering and technology companies founded between 1995 and 2005 had at least one key person who was foreign-born, and the same ratio of patents filed in 2005 listed an immigrant as an inventor or co-inventor. This shows that immigration helps keep the American economy innovative.

Effects of Immigration to the United States – Taxes  Illegal immigration has a positive effect on American citizens because immigrants in the United States pay more in taxes than they consume in social services.  This depends on the state because of different immigrant populations.

Solutions It is not right for illegal immigrants for illegally crossing the border because they arent paying income taxes, but it is also not right to deport 20 million illegal immigrants. The solution would be to close the border, they should also make a four-year work visa for illegal immigrants, during this time the government will see the applicant’s contribution to the society. After this time, a determination will be made to approve or deny the illegal immigrants application to renew his or her four year work visa.
