What is SharePoint Designer 2007? Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 is a software application that allows the end user to quickly and effectively create web pages in a similar way that its predecessor FrontPage had done.
4
Select SharePoint Designer if you are upgrading from FrontPage: Familiarity: SharePoint Designer is much closer to FrontPage than Expression Web is. Availability: SharePoint Designer is readily available through most Microsoft Campus Agreements. Suitability: SharePoint Designer is built for simple Web page development; Expression Web for professional Website development. What is SharePoint Designer 2007? SharePoint Designer utilizes the what you see is what you get, (WYSIWYG) approach, along with an ability to be used in a secure, collaborative, business environment via the Internet. This makes Designer 2007 a practical choice for any business, and therefore, well worth teaching in the 2 and 4 year colleges and universities.
7
What is SharePoint Designer 2007? Designer 2007 creates web sites and applications by using Designer 2007 Master Pages and Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) technologies. Designer 2007 also utilizes Extensible Hypertext Markup Language (XHTML) code and cascading style sheets to build SharePoint 2007 sites that meets any business (or personal) needs.
8
Reasons to Switch: Better HTML code Better look and feel (interface) Better CSS support Better support for other Office documents Move into the pipeline for future enhancements It is available on request for your office computer Because Microsoft says so!
9
The SharePoint Technologies The SharePoint technologies consist of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS), which is installed with Windows Server 2003 SP1, or in the Windows Server 2008 operating systems. You can download WSS 3.0 from the Windows Download Center on the Internet at the following site. http://download.microsoft.com http://download.microsoft.com

The SharePoint Technologies Other components of the SharePoint technologies include the software applications SharePoint Designer 2007 and SharePoint Server 2007 (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server – also referred to as MOSS). Good site for MOSS installation: http://www.rodneyviana.com/
12
The SharePoint Technologies The last feature included in the SharePoint technologies is Microsoft’s latest version of the.NET Framework. Windows Workflow Foundation, a key feature of SharePoint, is part of the.NET Framework. The.NET Framework can also be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center

SharePoint Designer 2007 Task Panes One of the major changes in Designer 2007 from the other Microsoft Office applications is the prolific use of task panes in the design environment. Task panes allow end users easy access to the tools that they are most likely to use.

SharePoint Designer addresses four important instances for its end users First, Designer allows for customization of its SharePoint sites. Customization means the end user can create the site to have a look and feel that they believe is appropriate for that particular site. Customization With more than 260,000 members in over 171 countries, PMI is the leading membership association for the project management profession. PMI is actively engaged in advocacy for the profession, setting professional standards, conducting research and providing access to a wealth of information and resources. PMI also promotes career and professional development and offers certification, networking and community involvement opportunities.

Customization Customizing has a distinct advantage over many webpage editing applications that provide templates. For example, sites relying on templates usually result in seeing many sites on the Web that have the same look and theme. SharePoint Designer addresses four important instances for its end users Second, Designer’s workflow technology allows for an element of business logic to be incorporated into SharePoint applications. Workflows are tasks that typically were associated with developers that were hired to program the workflow into an application. Hiring developers is a very costly way of producing a workflow on a web site. Customization –the bottom line… Customizing has a distinct advantage over many webpage editing applications that provide templates. For example, sites relying on templates usually result in seeing many sites on the Web that have the same look and theme. SharePoint Designer addresses four important instances for its end users SharePoint Services has workflows built in by default as part of the SharePoint installation. Workflows in short, will track tasks or action items that have been assigned within the organizational structure. Workflows make it easy to see where bottlenecks are taking place, or where the assigned work is flowing smoothly, without incident or delay. SharePoint Designer addresses four important instances for its end users Third, you can build advanced SharePoint Designer applications without having to program or code by using the WYSIWYG no-code feature in Designer. SharePoint Designer addresses four important instances for its end users And lastly, end users can integrate Designer 2007 with Visual Studio to enable rapid deployment of site definitions on a SharePoint platform. If you needed to create twenty departmental, or team sites, each site will have its own home page, instead of all twenty sites pointing to, and sharing one file, which would be the default.aspx file that is stored in the TEMPLATE folder of the web server (this is the common case when using asp.net).
