 Direct instruction (Lecture)  Independent Practice  Group work  Lab work  Discussion  Assessment  Remediation

 Students watch lectures at home, (10 – 20 min) via computer, ipod, phone, DVD.  Watch, take notes, pause, rewind.  “Homework” is done in class with me available to help.  Your “Homework”. ◦ Student intro ◦ Parent intro ◦ Khan Academy

 I’m now a helper/consultant not the “sage on the stage”  More time for group work/labs.  I get to know students better.  No more “ I understood it in class, but as soon as I got home…..”  Students overwhelmingly offer positive feedback.

 Summer 2009 – attended a workshop by Bergmann and Sams.  2009/10 – made a lesson for a substitute, tried a couple more at the end of the school year.  10/11 – 4 podcasts for one unit in 2 nd semester.  Summer 2011 – Made podcasts for ¾ of the school year. Finished the rest during the year.  11/12 – Completely flipped the classroom.  Summer 2012 – Made podcasts for AP Chemistry  12/13 – Flipped AP Chemistry.  Hey! Any supporting DATA?

 There was not a significant change in failure rate.  Took me a while to get down the production process.  This requires a significant amount of time outside of school.  Software and equipment are also needed. $$  Technology hurdles. Painful at times!  This process is not a cure-all. The pedagogy is the most important piece. Technology is second.

 30 pt. font  Background that’s not busy or dark.  Be careful with pictures – if image has a tag, you need permission.  Make your podcast interesting and alive. (pictures, animated GIF’s, your drawings) We are entertaining them!  Some Flippers use webcam and insert the images in the podcast.

 Hook up tablet and mic. Use tablet to navigate.  Open Power Point Document. (Use the Camtasia tool bar if you want ). Choose Ink Tools tab.  Start Camtasia.  Choose Record the screen. (I don’t use the PP option)  Size the screen to fit the slide. (may have to unlink the dimensions)  Choose the mic. Test it.  Turn on Webcam if you want it.

 Move recording box to top of screen.  Click Record – Lets do this!  Talk and write for about 15 seconds – click stop. Playback to see if levels are ok.  Delete will allow you to start over without watching. Pause will halt the recording and Resume will restart it seamlessly.

 Hit Stop when you are finished.  Save the camrec. file  Size prompt should be 640 width x 464 height, click ok. (this is the default setting)  Now we can edit!

 There is so much you can do.  Check your volume. Look for spikes.  Edit or add your zoom keyframes – Remove all zoom keyframes from edit menu or Zoom- n-Pan tab.  Fix mistakes with call-outs and the slider.  Call-out Example Call-out Example  Make a title clip ExampleExample

 When finished editing, click the Produce and Share tab.  Use default settings. Click Next.  Check name and destination for your production. Click Finish.  To share we need to have a place to upload to.

 You guys are fantastic and very understanding!  Using PowerPoint is not the most tablet-friendly program. Notebook and OneNote work well.  Macs are different than PC’s.  Camtasia may work well on your computer.  You can use Notebook for recording if you get an audio upgrade.  Struggling with technology is a valid way to learn.

 Software – Camtasia $99 - 300, free source available.  Microphone - $20-150, Bluetooth Headset, iPhone headphones  Tablet - $40-200, Smartboard?  Alternative – document camera and paper.

 Teacher Website  YouTube/Teacher Tube  iTunes  Flash Drive  Burned DVD’s – Nero, iDVD, free source  Sim card reader for phone  School computers, local library

 Don’t Forget to check your volume.  Check the zoom-ins, (I delete them, students didn’t like them.)  Have your dialog scripted.*No rambling, stay on task, don’t waste students time.  Do not read your slides, animate your voice!  Keep them brief and to the point.  Don’t forget to watch and edit.
