Mindset the new psychology of success How we can learn to fulfill our potential Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D.
Mindset O The view you adopt for yourself …………. O profoundly affects the way you lead your life.
Mindset O with practice, training and method, O we manage to: increase our attention, our memory, our judgment O and literally become more intelligent than we were before.
Purposeful Engagement O it’s not always the people who start out the smartest O Who end the smartest
Fixed vs Growth Mindset O Fixed Mindset – O Believing that your qualities are carved in stone …….. (intelligence is static) O creates an urgency to prove yourself over and over.
Growth Mindset O The hand you’re dealt is just the starting point for development O Based on the belief that your basic qualities are things that you can develop through your efforts
Fixed Mindset O Leads to a desire to look smart and therefore a tendency to: O Avoid challenges O Get defensive or give up easily O See no value in effort O Ignore useful or negative criticism O Feel threatened by the success of others
Growth Mindset O Intelligence can be developed O Leads to a desire to learn and a tendency to: O Embrace challenge O Persist in the face of setbacks O See effort as the path to mastery O Learn from constructive criticism O Find lessons and inspiration in the success of others
Adolescence O Is a time when hordes of kids turn off to school. You can almost hear the stampede as they try to get as far from learning as possible. O It is also the time when they are facing some of the biggest challenges of their young lives, when their self-esteem is in doubt.
Brainology O New research shows that the brain is more like a muscle – it changes and gets stronger the more you use it. O The brain forms new connections and ‘grows’ when people practice and learn new things O the more you challenge your mind to learn, the more your brain cells grow.
Change O People can change their mindsets when they are ready to embrace change and value effort. O when they value the process, and not just the end-product. O Change is never easy, but usually worthwhile.
