He is determined to get Dimmesdale to admit that he is Pearls father. Dimmesdale goes to Chillingworth to as him about a pain in his chest because he is having chest pains. They go to a grave yard to collect plants, and Chillingworth explains how these plants are his secret and that every one has a secret, and it’s a sign of sin and guilt that should be said to cleanse the soul. Dimmesdale claims that Chillingworth is in a fantasy land that, he has no right to take it upon him and judge weather or not the soul is cleansed and pure. That if a secret dies with you it is up to heaven to decide weather or not you shall pass. When both men return to the room, they see Pearl and Hester in the grave yard, and Dimmesdale brings Pearl up asking about a Physical disorder or illness, and Chillingworth wont give him an answer because Dimmesdale wont admit to having a dark secret.

Dimmesdale wants to know about his chest problem, Chillingworth says it is an internal problem not a physical problem. Dimmesdale is angered by the answer given, and tells Chillingworth that he is not doctor of “ medicine of the soul”. Chillingworth replies the evil is spreading and if he doesn’t reveal his evil sources it will never go away. Dimmesdale refuses to talk to Chillingworth because he is not God. When Dimmesdale leaves Chillingworth reflects on Dimmesdale’s passion and how easy it is to do a “ wild thing” with his passion.
