Archaeological Find Revision Purpose- Revise the steps and process of an archaeological dig Reflect on why it is important to conserve the remains of the past.

Finding Evidence from Archaeology Grade 7 History Term 1

Archaeologists find evidence- they collect, record and interpret it. Sometimes they know where they can find evidence (e.g. pyramids in Egypt), but often they have to dig up evidence from the past.

Where to Dig? Modern archaeologists use scientific techniques to find things: Aerial and Satellite photography to find different temperatures and minerals on the earth (could be ancient buildings and tombs underneath) Sonar equipment to measure sound to find metal based objects like relics or sunken boats in the ocean Looking in places were living like might have lived like in caves or beside rivers in open areas.

Excavating Remains Archaeologist must follow steps before a dig or excavation. Obtain permission from the government to dig at the site Survey the site marking it into a square grid with pegs and strings. When digging – be careful with the artefacts and not damage them May need to dig under several layers (strata) of earth to find remains Label found objects including which square and level it was found in

Activities of an Archaeological Dig Grade 7 History Term 1

Finds are carefully washed and labelled to record the trench and layers in which they were found.

Strata revealed in the trench give the age of the various earth layers

Brushes and trowels are used to carefully uncover objects

An ongoing record of the dig is kept

Objects and sections of the dig are photographed

Unwanted earth is removed from the trench

The site is marked out like a grid using pegs and strings

Archaeologists wear suitable clothing to protect them from the weather and conditions (e.g. hats, helmets, work boots, long-sleeve shirt)
