2 Background  Hobos were extremely popular during the depression witch is how the Scottsboro Trials came to be.  This began March 25, 1931 because two white women attempted to wrongly convict nine black men accused of rape.  A fight broke out on the freight train, and the whites were thrown off the train. 3 *Continued  They were going to be charged with assault until two white women dressed as males were discovered.  The women who had “relations” with the white males were afraid that the police would discover the truth, so, they claimed rape against the nine black men.  The nine young men were being tried for rape and eventually charged with rape. 4 *Continued  In 1932 the court system over ruled the conviction due to false evidence on the defendant.  The state later tried one of the boys, Haywood Patterson, and he was convicted a second time. Though, the judge believed the fact that he did not commit the crime accused.  The state again tried another of the boys, and, he was sentenced to death. 5 *Continued  They again tried the first boy, Haywood Patterson, and sentenced him to 75 years in prison.  Alabama released the four youngest of the boys, who served six years of prison, and later paroled all but Patterson.  Patterson escaped from prison and found his way up to Michigan, where in three years he was convicted for manslaughter and died in prison.  The last known survivor later went to the north in 1946 after his parole, and was granted a full pardon by the Albanian governor in ‘76.

8 Main Dates  March 25-30, 1931– the boys were arrested on assault charges.  July 5, 1938 – their death sentences were reduced to prison.  The official ending date is a blur because they all ended at different times.
