Chemical changes are changes substances undergo when they become new or different substances. For example, the fireworks we see on the 4th of July are actually metals such as magnesium and copper that change chemically as they light up the night skies with their fantastic colors. To identify a chemical change look for observable signs such as color change, bubbling and fizzing, light production, smoke, and presence of heat. #1: What happens to a substance when a chemical change occurs? #2: What are some signs of a chemical change? BELL RINGER: TUESDAY 10/1/13 Read the paragraph below and determine the main idea. Then, write and answer the questions.

MYP Unit Question: How can such a small thing impact our environment in such a big way? Area Of Interaction: Environment Learner Profile: Inquirer, Communicators Essential Question: How is matter described by physical and chemical properties and how does it change? Standard: Students will examine the scientific view of the nature of matter. e. Distinguish between changes in matter as physical (i.e., physical change) or chemical (development of a gas, formation of precipitate, and change in color). Learning Target: Today I will use my observation skills to determine if a reaction is chemical or physical. This is important so that I apply what I have learned to a real world situation. Homework: Complete Lab questions, study for tomorrows quiz

 Opening  Physical/ chemical foldable  Work Session  Foam Gnome Lab  Closing Quick Write AGENDA

 You will have 10 minutes to work individually to complete your foldbale. OPENING: FOLDABLE

 Lab expectations:  Put on all lab safety gear- these chemicals can cause severe harm to skin and eyes!!  Follow all Direction.  Work quietly with your lab partner  Do not drink the two chemicals!! WORK SESSION: LAB FOAM GNOMES

 If you are sitting at seat D please come up and get the materials for your table.  Today you will be working in pairs.  1 glove per pair  1 cup per pair  1 popsicle stick per pair DIRECTIONS

 If you have on the glove please come to the back of the room and get the liquids for your experiments. DIRECTIONS

 You have 4 minutes to summarize your observations from the lab using the following words: physical properties, chemical change, substance(s), indicators, chemical properties, exothermic reactions. QUICK WRITE
