3 P RESENTATION O VERVIEW 1) What is energy? 2) Different types of energy 3) Why is it important to conserve energy? 4) What can we do to conserve energy and stop global warming?

4 W HAT IS E NERGY ?  Energy lights our cities, powers our vehicles, and runs machinery in factories. It warms and cools our homes, cooks our food, plays our music, and gives us pictures on televisions.  Energy is defined as the ability or the capacity to do work.

5 Energy use has changed a great deal since people relied on the sun, their own bodies and the use of animals, like horses, as energy sources.

6 Long ago, people learned how to use water power to turn wheels to grind grain and saw wood. They used wind power to water farms and power sail boats.

7 People learned to use the chemical energy stored in wood to cook and heat their homes.

8 But machines and technologies introduced during the Industrial Revolution of the late 18 th century required greater amounts of energy found in fossil fuels.

9 TYPES OF ENERGY  RENEWABLE ENERGY: Renewable energy is creating power from existing sources without creating waste Some examples are: Solar energy, Wind energy, Geothermal energy, Hydro energy, Tidal power NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY: Non-renewable energy must be taken from the ground and creates some form of waste e.g. energy from burning of fossil fuels, coal, gas

11 WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CONSERVE ENERGY?

12 We save our money when we save energy We reduce pollution when we save energy We save non-renewable energy and protect the environment (Eco-systems)

13 Fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas are nonrenewable energy resources.

14 Our fossil fuels were formed over millions of years from decaying plants and animals. They can not be replaced.

15 The modern world depends on coal, oil and gas for most of its energy needs and will double its use of these energy resources in the next several decades. These resources will run out if we don’t conserve energy and try to find other forms of energy.

16 Burning fossil fuels such as natural gas, coal, oil and gasoline raises the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and carbon dioxide is the major contributor to the greenhouse effect and global warming.greenhouse effect and global warming

18 1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Reduce waste by choosing reusable products. Buy products with minimal packaging. Whenever you can, recycle paper, plastic, newspaper, glass and aluminum cans. By recycling half of our household waste, we conserve energy and can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.paperplastic WHAT CAN WE DO TO CONSERVE ENERGY AND STOP GLOBAL WARMING?

19 2) Turn off all electronic devices not in use, and unplug them Phantom loads, create around 6% of national electrical use.

20 3. Use Less Heat and Air Conditioning Turn down the heat while you're sleeping at night or away during the day. Setting your thermostat just 2 degrees lower in winter and 2 degrees higher in summer can save 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year.

21 4) Drive Less and Drive Smart Besides saving gasoline, walking and biking are great forms of exercise. Use your feet, a bike, the TTC, or carpool to school. When you do drive, make sure your car is running efficiently. For example, keeping your tires properly inflated can improve your gas mileage by more than 3 percent. Every litre of gas you save not only helps your budget, it also keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.tires properly inflated

22 5) Replace old light bulbs with energy saving LED bulbs. They save more money than compact flourescents and create no toxic waste.

23 6) Use the "Off" Switch Turn off: lights when you leave a room, and use only as much light as you need; TV, DVD player, computer and white board when you're not using them water when you're not using it - while brushing your teeth, shampooing the dog or washing your car - turn off the water until you actually need it for rinsing

24 7. Conserve Water We use a lot of energy to move water around the city and water heating also uses energy. To cut down on water use, take faster showers and be conscious of the water you use when washing dishes and clothes and preparing food. You can also save energy by lowering your hot water temperature

25 8) Reduce the energy used by appliances by using energy- efficient appliances.

26 9) Plant a TreePlant a Tree During photosynthesis, trees and other plants absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. They are part of the way the earth cleans its own air, but there are too few of them to deal with the carbon dioxide created by human activities. A single tree will absorb approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime.

27 10) Use Renewable Sources of Energy Renewable energy sources like geothermal power, which uses the earth’s natural heat, and biomass, which uses gases from waste, are part of the movement away from burning fossil fuels. Wind and solar power are also resources that can be turned into electricity to make toys run and heat homes.

28 11. Encourage Others to Conserve Share information about recycling and energy conservation with your family and friends, and encourage politicians to establish programs and policies that are good for the environment.
