The HPAT-Ulster is required for those applying to Speech and Language, Physiotherapy, Dietetics, Radiography, Occupational Therapy and Podiatry in Ulster University. 26 FEES IN COLLEGES OF FE. (NI) COURSES IN COLLEGES LIKE NORTH WEST REGIONAL COLLEGE AND BELFAST METROPOLITAN COLLEGE HAVE HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMAS & FOUNDATION DEGREES. THESE COURSES INCUR FEES. THIS YEAR £2,200 IN BELFAST MET. AND £1,380 IN NWRC THIS MAY INCREASE NEXT YEAR. OTHER COURSES DO NOT USUALLY INCUR FEES EXCEPT FOR EXAMS AND SPECIALIST EQUIPMENT. THIS TOO MAY CHANGE.

MOST OF THE COURSES in UNIVERSITIES ARE LEVEL 8 ie COMMERCE, NURSING, MEDICINE, LAW, ARTS, SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (WITH SOME EXCEPTIONS ie DENTAL NURSING) IN THE INSTITUTES OF TECHNOLOGY THERE ARE LEVEL 6, 7, and 8 (ladder system exists) HIGHER CERT., ORDINARY DEGREE AND HONOURS DEGREE.

39 These are the applicants for CK101 Arts in CORK UCC The examination results have not yet been released, so these applicants are in no particular order. We are going to trace the progress of the applicant marked in red.

40 Applicants are placed in a queue for each course they applied for, their position in the queue is determined by their points. The applicant with the highest points is placed at the top of the queue. The points achieved by the applicant in red determines her position in the queue for each course she applied to.

41 The applicants marked in green have enough points to be offered places. The applicant marked in red has enough points for her second preference.

42 CAO  IN ROUND 2 EVEN IF THE OTHER OFFERS WERE ACCEPTED OR REJECTED SHE MAY GET A FURTHER OFFER IN EACH LIST (provided she has not already been offered her 1 st choice)  AGAIN IT CAN BE ACCEPTED OR REJECTED AT THIS STAGE  MUST BE AROUND TO ATTEND TO THESE DECISIONS  OFFER LAPSES AFTER A CERTAIN TIME

43 DECIDING ON COURSES IN CAO  STUDENT PUTS DOWN THE COURSE THEY REALLY WANT FIRST, THEN CONTINUE IN ORDER OF PREFERENCE  IF CAO OFFERS STUDENT HER FIRST CHOICE STUDENT WILL NOT GET ANY MORE OFFERS AT THIS LEVEL.

44 IT IS VITAL THAT EACH STUDENT HAS A BACK UP IN HER APPLICATION MOST COURSES CAN BE ACCESSED IN AN ALTERNATIVE WAY. WHILE IT MAY BE A LONGER ROUTE, IF IT IS WHAT THE STUDENT WANTS IT MAY BE WORTH THE WAIT.

BUT €2,000 STILL PAYABLE  TAX RELIEF IS ALLOWABLE AT LOWER RATE (INFORMATION FROM REVENUE) SOME COURSES ARE ACCREDITED BY ENGLISH UNIVERSITIES. ie LAW AND BUSINESS MANAGEMENT IN DBS.

49 MONTESSORI TEACHING AMI COLLEGE APPLICATION TO THE COLLEGE RECOGNISED BY DES FOR TEACHING OF SPECIAL NEEDS CAN DO UP TO DEGREE LEVEL FEES LAST YEAR €5,300- € 5,500

50 ST NICHOLAS IS ALSO A MONTESSORI COLLEGE WHERE FEES ARE €5,610 HOWEVER STUDENTS CAN FOLLOW A COURSE IN MONTESSORI IN A COLLEGE OF FURTHER EDUCATION WHERE FEES ARE ONLY CHARGED FOR EXAMS

51 TWO SUPPLEMENTARY ADMISSION ROUTES TO HIGHER EDUCATION DARE DISABILITY ACCESS ROUTE TO EDUCATION. HEAR HIGHER EDUCATION ACCESS ROUTE FOR THOSE FROM SOCIO-ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED BACKGROUNDS

52 Disability Access Route to Education DARE Not all colleges participate in scheme. Some of the disabilities eligible for consideration are: ADD/ADHDPHYSICAL disability DYSPRAXIA DYSLEXIA HEALTH CONDITIONS Students must apply to the CAO by the 1 st Feb. They then complete the DARE application SIF (supplementary information form) by 1 st March

58 MAINTENANCE GRANTS  STUDENT UNIVERSAL SUPPORT IRELAND(SUSI)  APPLY TO SUSI FOR BOTH THE UNIVERSITES and INSTITUTES OF TECHNOLOGY  MEANS TESTED  THIS YEAR CLOSING DATE 31 st AUGUST 2011

59 MAINTENANCE GRANTS  IF STUDENT IS ELIGIBLE FOR GRANT THEY CAN USE IT IN UK FOR CERTAIN COURSES.  County Council only handles applications for ‘renewal students – i.e.those in the system prior to this year

60 GRANT LEVELS The Rate of grant varies. Depends on number of dependent children and will be based on the income for the tax year 2012 The amount for level 1 IN 2012/13€755 (adj €305) The Amount for level 6: € 5915 (adj. €2,375) In the last budget there was a reduction of 4% in all grants and the adjacent distance was increased to 45 kilometres Monaghan town is kl from Dundalk and 48.44kl from Cavan.

64 CHANGES TO ENTRY TO MEDICINE IN ROI STUDENTS MUST OBTAIN AT LEAST 480 POINTS IN THE LC AND HAVE REQUIRED SUBJECTS AT ONE SITTING. MUST DO HPAT-IRELAND. IT WILL TAKE PLACE ON 2 March 2013 –Results late June REGISTRATION- opens early November ireland.acer.edu.au results valid for 2 Years. COST €115 (includes practice test with worked solutions)www.hpat- ireland.acer.edu.au MUST HAVE CAO NUMBER

75 STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY  IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO COMPLETE THEIR OWN FORM AND TO HAVE IT IN ON TIME  EACH STUDENT MUST MAKE SURE THEY HAVE THEIR LIST IN ORDER OF PREFERENCE. IT IS TOO LATE IN AUGUST TO CHANGE THE PREFERENCE.  WE ARE HERE TO HELP.

80 WHAT SHOULD PARENTS DO? Help them find out about careers Talk to friends and students already in college. Check entry requirements and what they study in the course. Encourage them to have a balance between study, healthy diet, exercise, fresh air and rest.
